「description」は記述や説明、言葉による描写のことである。「Please provide a detailed description of the incident.（事件についての詳しい説明をしてください。）」また、種類や銘柄のことを指す場合もある。「I ate and compared sweets of every description.（ありとあらゆるお菓子を食べ比べてみました。）」そのほか、警察が逃走中の容疑者などを捜索するために作成する人相書も「description」という。「The man's face on the security camera answered to a description.（防犯カメラに映っていた男の顔は人相書と一致しました。）」

コンピューター用語ではWebページの紹介文となる記事の要約や概要を記したテキストを「description」や「meta description」という。検索順位には直接影響しないものの、クリック率やトラフィックの向上に関わるため、どのような「description」を設定するかはSEOにおいて重要な問題である。「description」の文字数に制限はないが、デバイスによって表示される文字数には制限がある。「The description displayed on smartphone screen is 71 characters.（スマートホンの画面に表示されるディスクリプションは71文字です。）
