| オクラホマが正式の州として認められなかった1907年頃の開拓地。歌のうまいカーリイ（ゴードン・マクレイ）は今夜の村祭に恋人ローリイ（シャーリー・ジョーンズ）を誘ったが、それ迄のソッケない態度が祟ってデイトを申し込んでもアッサリ断られる。彼女の機嫌を直そうとカーリイが得意のノドを聞かせても、ローリイはあてつけに雇人のジャド（ロッド・スタイガー）と祭に行く約束をしてしまう。ところが娘たちにモテすぎるカーリイを見て気が気ではなく、２人は結局仲直りするが、今更断れぬとローリイはジャドと同車で村祭へ。本性を現したジャドはキッスを迫るが、抵抗するローリイに車から転げ落ちる。会場では学校建設資金にと婦人持ち手提篭のセリが始まる。セリ落とした者がその婦人を独占できるというのでジャドは有金を投げ出し、ローリイの篭に賭ける。驚いたカーリイは拳銃から馬まで売り払って遂に恋人を確保。なおもつきまとうジャドを怒ったローリイは馘にしてしまう。オクラホマ！の大合唱の中で、カーリイとローリイは結婚式を挙げる。しかしジャドはあくまでローリイを狙い、彼女を護ろうとしたカーリイともみ合う中に持ったナイフで自分を刺して絶命する。だが裁判の結果もカーリイはもちろん無罪。飾りのついた４輪馬車で２人がハネムーンに旅立つ処へ、オクラホマが合衆国に加入したとの朗報がもたらされる。２人の乗った４輪馬車は若人の夢と希望を乗せて、玉蜀漆畑の道に消えて行く。 |

『オクラホマ!』（Oklahoma!）は、ロジャース&ハマースタインの作詞作曲家コンビによる第1作目のミュージカル。リン・リッグズの1931年の戯曲「ライラックは緑に育つ」を基にしている。1906年のアメリカ中西部・オクラホマ州クレアモア郊外のインディアン準州の農村を舞台に、農家の娘ローリー・ウィリアムズに対するカウボーイのカーリー・マクレーンと、陰鬱な農場労働者のジャッド・フライという2人の求婚者による恋の三角関係を明るく陽気に描いたものである。同時にカウボーイのウィル・パーカーと、浮気性の婚約者エイドエニーの不安定な恋愛模様も描かれている。

ホクラホマはアメリカ国内でも最大級の風力源があるとされ、小型風力発電機の主要製造者であるバーギー・ウィンドパワー(Bergey Windpower)社はオクラホマに所在する。風力発電産業での能力開発につながる授業が技術学校やコミュニティ・カレッジ、大学などで行われている。オクラホマ風力イニシアティブ(Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative)によって州内での風力発電の開発を支援している 。

詳細は「オクラホマ!」を参照 ロジャースもハマースタインもそれぞれリン・リグスの戯曲『Green Grow the Lilacs』のミュージカル化を検討していた。ハマースタインの提案をカーンが断り、ロジャースの提案をハートが断ったため、ロジャースとハマースタインは初めてコラボレーションすることとなった。この結果、『Green Grow the Lilacs』を原作とした『オクラホマ!』（1943年）は革新的ミュージカル・ドラマとなった。感情の深さや複雑な心理を描いたミュージカルは初めてではなかったが、『オクラホマ!』は多くの新たな構成や技術を用いていた。物語を語るのに演技よりも歌やダンスを使用し、全ての曲に意味を持たせた。 『オクラホマ!』は当初『Away We Go!』と名付けられ、1943年3月、コネチカット州ニューヘイブンにあるシュバート・シアターで開幕した。ブロードウェイ開幕前にいくつかの変更が行われた。主な変更点は、盛り上がりの曲『Oklahoma!』の追加、曲『Boys and Girls Like You and Me』をカットして『People Will Say We're in Love』を追加、追加された曲に合わせたミュージカル作品自体の改題の3点であった。 1943年3月31日、セント・ジェイムズ・シアターでオリジナル・ブロードウェイ・プロダクションが開幕した。当時のミュージカルはエセル・マーマンやフレッド・アステアなどのスターを中心に上演することが通例であったが、このプロダクションではスターを起用しなかった。アルフレッド・ドレイク（カーリー）、ジョーン・ロバーツ（ローリー）、セレステ・ホルム（アド・アニー）、ハワード・ダ・シルヴァ（ジャッド・フライ）、ベティ・ガード（エラー叔母）、リー・ディクソン（ウィル・パーカー）、ジョセフ・バロフ（アリ・ハキム）がオリジナル・キャストとして出演した。マーク・プラットが『Dream Curly』の、キャスリン・サーガヴァが『Dream Laurey』のダンスを担当した。『オクラホマ!』ではスターの魅力よりも物語や音楽がより重要と考えられていた。2,212回上演し、当時かつてないほどのロングラン公演となり1948年5月29日に閉幕した。前述の『People Will Say We're in Love』や『Oklahoma!』のほか、『Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'』、『The Surrey with the Fringe on Top』、『I Cain't Say No』など使用楽曲の多くがスタンダード・ナンバーとなっている。 1955年、Todd-AOシステムによる70mmフィルムのワイドスクリーンで史上初めて撮影された映画版『オクラホマ!』が公開され、アカデミー賞を受賞した。ゴードン・マクレー、シャーリー・ジョーンズが主演し、サウンドトラック『Oklahoma! 』は1956年のアルバム・チャートで第1位を獲得した。 『オクラホマ!』の成功の後、ロジャース&ハマースタインは一旦離れ、ハマースタインはジョルジュ・ビゼーの『カルメン』を現代の南部に置き換え、登場人物をアフリカ系アメリカ人にしたブロードウェイ・ミュージカル『Carmen Jones』の脚本執筆および作詞に集中した。1954年、映画版『カルメン』が製作され、主演のドロシー・ダンドリッジがアカデミー主演女優賞にノミネートされた。
