ヒト属の一部の種は50万年前（もしくは500ka）から始まる、旧人類（英語: Archaic humans）という大区分に分類される。典型的にホモ・ネアンデルターレンシス（40ka-300ka）、ホモ・ローデシエンシス（125ka-300ka）、ホモ・ハイデルベルゲンシス（200ka-600ka）を含み、ホモ・アンテセッサー（800ka-1200ka）を含める場合もある[1]。この区分はホモ・サピエンス・イダルトゥとホモ・サピエンス・サピエンスが含まれる解剖学的現生人類と対比される[1][2]。
