●ヨーロッパ原産の野生「すみれ」から改良されたもので、「ガーデンパンジー（Garden pansy）」とも呼ばれます。花径が５センチ以上のものが「パンジー」で、それより小さなものは「タフテッドパンジー（Tuftedpansy）」、または「ビオラ（Viola）」と呼ばれます。花期は秋から春にかけて。花色が豊富で春の花壇を彩る代表的な花です。和名では「さんしきすみれ（三色菫）」。

サンシキスミレ、又はサンショクスミレ(三色菫)は、一年生もしくは短命な多年生の野草。園芸種であるパンジーの原種の一つで、それゆえ数多くある英名の一つにワイルドパンジーの別名があり、その名で呼ばれることもある。園芸種が今日のように洗練され広く植栽される以前は、パンジーと云う語は当種を指した。
