石油タンカー（せきゆタンカー）は、石油をばら積みで運ぶために設計された船（タンカー）である。

^ 貨物船としての石油タンカーの大きさは「トン」で表されるが、その貨物である原油は世界的には「バレル」で計られることが一般的であり、日本ではバレルと共にキロリットルで表示されることが多い。
^ 例えば、排水量104,500 ロングトンの「ユニバース・アポロ」(Universe Apollo) は、1958年の文書ではスーパータンカーとして触れられている^[47]。
^ 委員会では、海運業界でしばしば表明されている、船級協会の業務が求められている基準に達していないという懸念を共有する^[77]しかしながら、船級協会に影響している商業的な圧力と、この分野で増加しつつある充分な技能と職業意識に欠けた組織のために、船舶業界からのこれらの組織に対する信頼が近年低下している^[78]
