工学(こうがく、: engineering)またはエンジニアリングとは、基礎科学である数学化学物理学などを工業生産に応用する学問[1][2][3]。「真理探究」を目指す基礎科学と「実用」を目指す工学の違いは絶対的ではなく[4]、例えば電子工学薬品生産などがあると『日本大百科全書』は述べている[4][注釈 1]。これらの分野では、基礎科学・基礎研究の成果が応用科学研究開発の中へと直接組み込まれている[4]

    基礎科学…実用上の目的から独立し、真理の探究そのものが目的とされる。…しかし現実には基礎科学と応用科学の区別は絶対的なものではない。たとえば電子工学や薬の生産などでは、基礎研究の成果が密接に開発研究と結び付いている。そうした科学に直接基礎を置くいくつかの技術においては、基礎科学の成果は直接、応用科学の体系に組み込まれる。[4]
