コロンビア特別区（コロンビアとくべつく、英: District of Columbia）は、アメリカ合衆国の首都。アメリカ合衆国東部に位置する連邦直轄地である。東海岸、メリーランド州とヴァージニア州に挟まれたポトマック川河畔に位置する。通称は、ワシントンD.C.（ワシントン・ディー・シー、英: Washington, D.C.）。

- ^ 同様な計画都市としては旧満州国の新京（現在の中華人民共和国吉林省長春市）、オーストラリアのキャンベラ、ブラジルのブラジリア（共に首都）がある。
- ^ 通常、都市圏や広域都市圏の名称では人口の多い都市の名が先にするが、ワシントン・ボルチモア・北バージニア広域都市圏は例外的に首都であるワシントンD.C.の名称を先にしている。
- ^ 1790年までに、南部州はアメリカ独立戦争の外債をほとんど返済していた。これに対し、北部州は返済が進んでおらず、新しい連邦政府に未払いの負債を引き継いでもらいたいと考えていた。これは、南部州が北部州の負債を肩代わりすることを事実上意味していたので、その見返りとして、南部州は連邦の首都を自分たちの農業地域・奴隷使用地域の利権の近くに置くようロビー活動を行ったのである。前掲Centennial History of the City of Washington, D. C.124頁参照。

- ^ アメリカ合衆国大統領選挙では、初参加となった1964年から直近の2016年の選挙に至るまで、全ての選挙で民主党候補が7〜9割台の得票率で圧勝している。特に、1972年・1984年の選挙では、民主党候補（ジョージ・マクガヴァン、ウォルター・モンデール）は50州中1州（マクガヴァンはマサチューセッツ州、モンデールはミネソタ州）でしか選挙人を獲得出来ず、共和党候補（リチャード・ニクソン、ロナルド・レーガン）に惨敗したが、それらの選挙においてもD.C.は民主党候補が8割前後の得票率（マクガヴァンは78.1%、モンデールは85.4%）で圧勝している。
