現在のイラク、カーディーシーヤ県、アファク地区のヌファル（Nuffar）が古代のニップルにあたる。この都市はシュメール語ではNibru、アッカド語ではNibbur / Nippur、楔形文字文書では EN.LÍLKI（𒂗𒆤𒆠）と表記される[1][2]。EN.LÍL（𒂗𒆤）という名詞に地名を表す限定符キ（KI、𒆠）が付された場合それはニップル市を表し、神を表す限定符ディンギル（Dingir、𒀭）が付された dEN.LÍL はニップルの都市神であるエンリルを表した[3][注釈 1]。

- ^ この神名と地名は人名の構成要素として使用される場合などにはしばしば互換的な用いられ方をした。シュメール語やアッカド語では人名の一部として神の名が頻繁に用いられたが、ニブルタ・ル（「ニップルからきた男（児）」）のような人名においては EN.LÍLKI（ニップル）という地名をdEN.LÍLと置き換えることができた[3]。
- ^ アマル・シン以降のウル第3王朝の王は首都ウル、父祖の地ウルク、聖都ニップルを月単位で巡幸し、それぞれの神々に犠牲を捧げた。これは神々への祭儀権を王が特権として保持していることを示すものであり、特にニップルのエンリル神への犠牲奉納は最も重視された[20]。
