L2/09-064 Subject: Request to change some ARIB/AMD6 character names and a code point Date: 2009-Jan-29 Author: Markus Scherer (See L2/08-246 PDAM 6.2) 1. Name changes 1.a) ARIB-9003= U+26CE TRAFFIC WARNING just looks like another exclamation point. I propose changing its name to something descriptive of the shape, for example EXCLAMATION MARK ORNAMENT, rather than its Japanese TV Symbols semantics. An annotation like "Can be used for traffic warning in Japan" could be added. 1.b) There are ten ARIB symbols (Japanese TV Symbols) which have names with "WHITE ON BLACK" rather than the customary "NEGATIVE". Unicode 5.1 does not have any characters with "WHITE ON BLACK" in their names. Please rename these ten ARIB/AMD6 symbols. The preliminary code points of these symbols are in the range U+1F157..U+1F18D. U+1F157 WHITE ON BLACK CIRCLED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER H -> NEGATIVE CIRCLED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER H U+1F15F WHITE ON BLACK CIRCLED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P -> NEGATIVE CIRCLED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P U+1F179 WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER J -> NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER J U+1F17B WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER L -> NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER L U+1F17C WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER M -> NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER M U+1F17F WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P -> NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P U+1F18A CROSSED WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P -> CROSSED NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P U+1F18B WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED IC -> NEGATIVE SQUARED IC U+1F18C WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED PA -> NEGATIVE SQUARED PA U+1F18D WHITE ON BLACK SQUARED SA -> NEGATIVE SQUARED SA 2. Code point change Please move the preliminary code point of ARIB-9289 SQUARE DJ from U+1F14F to U+1F190 because it does not fit well with the U+1F14x characters. It's DJ in a square glyph, not in a square box. It belongs to other Squared Latin Abbreviations in U+32xx but that is filling up as well with Unicode 5.2/AMD6.
