Report: 23 Jump Street will be a crossover with Men in Black

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones aren't involved

Sony Pictures is moving ahead with plans to release a 23 Jump Street film that will act as a crossover with the Men in Black franchise, according to a report from Variety.

The film will see Jump Street stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill reprise their roles as undercover detectives Schmidt and Jenko, but they won't be joined by Men in Black actors Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones. Sony is reportedly looking to recast Smith and Jones' iconic agent roles with younger actors.

Although the crossover rumor first started floating around during the massive Sony hack that occurred in 2014, this is the first time the studio has said anything about moving forward.

James Bobin, the director best known for Muppets Most Wanted, is in early talks with the studio to helm the crossover feature. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were originally supposed to direct the movie, but couldn't figure out shooting times that didn't overlap with the Han Solo film they're making for Disney.

No official green light has been given to the production, but an early script has reportedly been approved by Sony and executives are hoping to start production this June.
