The Burundi constitutional court ruled Monday that president-elect Evariste Ndayishimiye should be sworn in “as soon as possible,” following the death of President Pierre Nkurunziza on June 8.

Ndayishimiye was originally scheduled to be sworn in on August 20. However, because of Nkurunziza’s unexpected death, the court had to choose between an interim president or a constitutional interpretation that allowed the immediate induction of the president-elect.

The court determined that an acting president was “not necessary.” Since Burundi was already elected in May, the purpose for the interim no longer existed. The results of the election were also upheld by the constitutional court on June 4.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to occur this week.
