UNCASVILLE, Connecticut – Adrien Broner does not have to worry about squeezing down to the junior welterweight limit of 140 pounds by Friday morning.

BoxingScene.com has learned that the contracted maximum for his fight against Jovanie Santiago has been changed to the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. Neither Broner nor Santiago would discuss the contract weight with BoxingScene.com before their press conference Thursday at Mohegan Sun, but both camps have agreed to the weight switch.

Broner informed BoxingScene.com last week that he had to lose “over 35 pounds” since he began training camp late in November. Santiago took this 12-round fight on slightly more than one month’s notice, once Broner’s original opponent, Mexico’s Pedro Campa, tested positive for COVID-19.

Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions announced Friday in a press release that Broner-Santiago would be a 12-round junior welterweight fight. Once it became clear this week that getting down to 140 pounds was not realistic for Broner, their representatives settled on increasing the contract weight by seven pounds.

Broner laughed when asked about the contract weight Thursday and replied, “Whatever it say on the paper.”

Cincinnati’s Broner will fight for the first time in two years in Showtime’s main event Saturday night. He hasn’t boxed since Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao beat him by unanimous decision in their 12-round, 147-pound title fight in January 2019 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Puerto Rico’s Santiago was instructed by his promoter, Juan Orengo, not to talk about the contracted weight when asked about it Thursday by BoxingScene.com.

“He doesn’t wanna talk about the contract, about the weight,” Orengo said through a translator.

The 31-year-old Santiago (14-0-1, 10 KOs) officially weighed 140 pounds for his most recent fight, a first-round knockout of Peru’s Juan Zegarra (16-1, 10 KOs, 1 NC) on December 16 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The 31-year-old Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs, 1 NC) last fought at the junior welterweight limit of 140 pounds in July 2017. He officially weighed 138¾ pounds for that 12-rounder, a unanimous-decision defeat to Mikey Garcia at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Broner-Santiago will headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader Saturday night from Mohegan Sun Arena (9 p.m. EST; 6 p.m. PST).

Heavyweights Dominic Breazeale (20-2, 18 KOs), of Eastvale, California, and Otto Wallin (21-1, 14 KOs, 1 NC), of Sundsvall, Sweden, will meet in the 12-round co-feature. In the 12-round opener of the telecast, junior welterweight contender Robert Easter Jr. (22-1-1, 14 KOs), of Toledo, Ohio, is scheduled to encounter Ryan Martin (24-1, 14 KOs), of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
