Donald Glover may be best known as QB-in-recovery Troy Barnes on NBC comedy “Community,” but the actor/writer/comedian is adding another slash to his title: Rapper.
Glover has been playing the rap game for some time already, going by the name Childish Gambino, but now his video for “Freaks and Geeks” (a TV-centric title indeed) is making the rounds virally. The dance-filled clip, filmed in a warehouse, comes hot off the success of Childish Gambino’s recent appearance on a Jamie xx remix of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

Perhaps Childish Gambino’s biggest asset is his cultural self-awareness. He drops references to “Black Swan,” indie artist Ariel Pink, and even breaks into Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” briefly. Then again, what do you expect from a former “30 Rock” writer? Dude’s bound to be clever.
Glover is taking his show on the road, both performing comedy and spitting rhymes on his upcoming nationwide “IAMDONALD” tour. Childish Gambino’s latest EP drops March 8.
