World and religious leaders, politicians and organisations have been reacting to video released by the Islamic State (IS) militant group, purporting to show the beheading of British hostage Alan Henning.

The apparent killing of the Salford taxi driver, who had been delivering aid to Syria when he was kidnapped, has drawn widespread condemnation.

The brutal murder of Alan Henning by Isil (IS) shows just how barbaric and repulsive these terrorists are.

My thoughts and prayers tonight are with Alan's wife Barbara, their children and all those who loved him.

Alan had gone to Syria to help get aid to people of all faiths in their hour of need. The fact that he was taken hostage when trying to help others and now murdered demonstrates that there are no limits to the depravity of these Isil terrorists.

We will do all we can to hunt down these murderers and bring them to justice.

The United States strongly condemns the brutal murder of United Kingdom citizen Alan Henning by the terrorist group Isil. Mr Henning worked to help improve the lives of the Syrian people and his death is a great loss for them, for his family and the people of the United Kingdom.

Standing together with our UK friends and allies, we will work to bring the perpetrators of Alan's murder - as well as the murders of Jim Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Haines - to justice. Standing together with a broad coalition of allies and partners, we will continue taking decisive action to degrade and ultimately destroy Isil.

Sincere condolences to Alan Henning's family. Barbaric actions of Isil are held in complete contempt. We are resolved to defeat this evil.

Alan Henning was a man moved to selflessly help those most in need and we should remember that above all else at this difficult time.

UK Labour leader Ed Miliband

The murder of Alan Henning by Isil is appalling and barbaric. He was an aid worker, helping those in need.

Those who killed him have revealed only their lack of humanity and brutality. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife Barbara, his children and all those who knew him. We will do everything we can to support the efforts of the government to bring those guilty of this terrible act to justice.

Saddened by reported murder of Alan Henning. A despicable and offensive act. He helped Muslims. My thoughts and prayers with his family.

Alan Henning's memory will last. He gave his life serving people far away with nobility and love. Pray for his family's strength and courage.

[This] is not just an appalling crime against humanity and a devastating blow to his family and loved ones, it is an attack against all those who want to help innocent civilians caught in the madness of a terrible war.

I can well understand the despair that this latest act of barbaric propaganda will have caused among Mr Henning's family and friends. This is one of the aims of his killers. They want to kill our humanity and our solidarity with the ordinary suffering Syrian people.

The most lasting tribute that we can pay to this good man is to surrender neither our compassion nor our determination to bring light into the darkness that has descended on the lives of the people for whom he gave his own life.

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation

I am appalled at the brutal murder of Alan Henning by the evil Isis (IS), this barbaric killing is an attack against all decent people around the world.

For weeks now the world has tried to appeal to these murderers to do the decent thing but they have no compassion or respect for human life.

Alan Henning was a British hero, he put others first and we salute him and his life of service for others. My thoughts and condolences to Alan's family and friends.

British Muslims stand with Alan's family and vow to defeat this evil ideology and barbaric organisation. Islam not only condemns these crimes but forbids them, those that carry them out are committing crimes against Islam.

Alan Henning was the best of British and we pledge to never forget him as a person and all that he has done.

Family of Peter Kassig, US hostage also threatened by IS

The Kassig family extends our concern for the family of Alan Henning. We have read about his work and his generous character with great respect and admiration. We ask everyone around the world to pray for the Henning family, for our son, and for the release of all innocent people being held hostage in the Middle East and around the globe.

Joint statement by Muslims of the North of England

Alan Henning was our local and national hero. We will remember him as a tireless and selfless humanitarian aid worker whose only concern was to help people in need.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Alan Henning's family at what must be an unbearable time.

The killing of Alan Henning was a cowardly and criminal act of appalling brutality by a group who do not represent Islam at all and in fact are an insult to the Islamic faith.

The killing of Alan Henning marks the beginning of the end of this group (IS). We now call for justice to be carried out on the killers of Alan Henning.

We also make clear that the killing of Alan Henning should not be used by individuals and groups in positions of authority or otherwise to defame the religion of Islam or further tarnish the positive image of Muslims for the crimes of a tiny minority of brutal killers.

Hanif Qadir, founder of Active Change Foundation

The fact that they have chosen to commit this barbaric act on the eve of the Eid al-adha, a global expression of forgiveness and mercy among Muslims, only demonstrates the extent of the evil and barbaric nature of these criminals.

They have not shown any ounce of mercy or compassion and are therefore totally against Islam and are hell bent on killing innocent individuals and must be stopped.

As a British Muslim I urge every other Muslim in the UK to stand up and refute these terrorists and distance themselves from this brutality and false Islam.

United Nations Security Council statement

This crime is a tragic reminder of the increasing dangers volunteer humanitarian personnel face every day in Syria. It also once again demonstrates the brutality of Isil, which is responsible for thousands of abuses against the Syrian and Iraqi people.

The Isis murder of Alan Henning is a depraved Satanic act committed by devils in human form. It is a desecration of all that is holy.

Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell

Words are inadequate to describe the revulsion which this action will cause. The deliberate and humiliating murder of an innocent man defies all humanity.

But this is a provocation which must be met with good judgement and determination.

Ronald Noble, Interpol secretary general

The cruel murder of an innocent man who freely gave his time to assist the people of the very region where he met his death is a testament to the depravity of this terrorist group, which is seeking to create a reign of terror across the region.
