Tashkent-the capital of Republic of Uzbekistan and the largest city in the Central Asia is regarded as a main gate to the East.

Tashkent is the administrative, political, economical and cultural centre of Uzbekistan.
The Organization of Islamic Conference, Tashkent was declared the capital of Islamic culture in 2007. It is proof of worldwide recognition of the huge contribution of the Uzbek people to the development of Islam and preservation of inter confessional concord in the country. Tashkent is the “guardian” of the Koran of Usman written in the VII century and, being an oldest version of the sacred book, was brought from Baghdad by Amir Temur during his campaign.

Tashkent is an industrially developed city and accounts for more than 14% of the national GDP of Uzbekistan.
There are more than 34500 different companies operating in the city, about 27400 are micro firms, 4950 are small and another 2230 medium sized companies. There are about 2761 are companies with foreign capital investment.

In the gross municipal product of Tashkent, trade and services amount to roughly 67%, industry-15%, other spheres-18%. As of January 1, 2007 the numbers of registered industrial companies reached 5043 and 4813 or 95.5% are small business, which produced more than 48% of the total municipal product.
The retail trade and the services sector are growing fast. In 2006, retail trade in the city of Tashkent exceeded UZS 1972.6 billion and services equaled UZS 673.1 billion.

About 164 large industrial companies operate successfully in Tashkent. They produce airplanes, railway cars, tractors, excavators, various kinds of agricultural machinery, electro transformers, instruments, medical and electronic equipment, cables, home appliances, including TVs, spinning and textile technical equipment, painting and varnishing products and many other things. A few of them are “Toshkent aviatsiya ishlab chiqarish birlashmasi”  (“TAPOICH”), “Toshkent traktor zavodi” , “O’zKabel” joint-stock company, “Toshkent truba zavodi” joint-stock company, “Toshkent lak-bo’oq zavodi” joint-stock company, “243-sonli zavod” joint-stock company, “Algoritm”, “SovPlastItal”.

83 companies have taken part in the progarmme to set up manufacturing units locally within the framework of 159 projects. In 2006, import- substituting products exceeding UZS 114.2 billion were produced, which made for an additional USD 8.2 million in exports.

The city of Tashkent has one of the highest rates of foreign investment in Uzbekistan. UZS 741.6 billion in total was invested in the municipal economy in 2006, about 76% which of was invested in the further development of the industrial sector and more than 24% was involved in the non-production sector.

It is necessary to emphasize a special role of joint venture in Tashkent. They play an important role in increasing the level of production and well-being of the population. Joint-venture companies such as “FarmGlass”, “KorFarmSanoat”, “FulongIndastrial”, “Pashal”, “Koka-kola ichimligi”, “DoycheKabel”, “Foton”, “ZenitElektroniks”, “TashTekstil”, “BF Tekstayl”, “SafariTekstil”, “RamelTekstil”, ”MuruvvatTeks”, “AjraboTekstil”, “Sag’bonTekstil” are doing very well.

It is also important to point out the significant achievements in the field of capital construction and repair of different economic, social and cultural objects and facilities. Eight bridges and a number of highways, which have completed the process of construction of “the Tashkent inner ring road” within the city, are now in use; the National park of Uzbekistan named after A.Navoi, a recreation park named after A Kodiriy have been reconstructed; works were also done to give the main square of Uzbekistan- “Mustaqillik maydoni” a new look.
The social sphere is also important. There are about 514 preschool, 335 schools, 30 academic lyceums, 85 professional colleges and 30 higher educational institutions in the Tashkent r. There are about 100 medical institutions functioning in the sphere of public health services.

In the last elections to the bicameral parliament and local kengash of people’s deputies the city of Tashkent elected:

  • 6 members of the Senate;
  • 11 deputies of the Legislative Chamber;
  • 60 deputies to the Kengash of people’s deputies of the city of Tashkent;

There are  more than 1320 NGO’s , more than 130 publications in print  “Xalq so’zi ”, “Вечерный Ташкент” ,”Toshkent Oqshomi”, “JannatMakon” and others as well as a ”Toshkent” TV channel operating in Tashkent.
