What does the name Dragora mean?

The name comes firstly from mandragora, a plant which has been used for centuries in magic rituals and as medicine. The name "Dragora" also refers to dragons, two of which are represented in the project's logo, symbolizing both universality and duality.

What is the project's history?

Dragora was created in 2007 by Matias A. Fonzo, <selk (a) dragora org> in Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

After going through two beta versions and a release candidate in 2008, a stable "1.0" version was released on March 13, 2009.

• All editions of Dragora are published under the GNU GPL (General Public License).

Is Dragora based on another distribution?

No, Dragora is not based on another distribution. It was created from scratch.

Why should I use Dragora?

We can only cite what we believe are Dragora's main strengths:

• Independent. Dragora is an independent project and a GNU/Linux distribution not based on any other. Therefore, we avoid inheriting the technical and ethical problems of being based on a distribution outside our control. Another advantage: being an independent project, we are not subject to commercial interests, or any interests other than our own.

• Simple. The underlying concept of Dragora's design philosophy is simplicity: KISS, "Keep It Simple, Stupid!". This principle, which derives from what is known as "Ockham's razor," was developed by the first modern critical philosopher: William of Ockham. We believe this concept represents the traditional UNIX philosophy - so we don't add functionality unnecessarily, nor do we duplicate information.

• Ethical. We ensure that the software is completely free and allows you to legally run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. To reiterate: Dragora is 100% free software.

• Native language support.

• Community. Dragora is not a closed project. On the contrary, anyone person with good intentions is welcome - and encouraged! - to join and help.

What are the goals of the project?

The goals of the project are:

• Respect the own freedom of others, taking into account the values and virtues of free software.

• Supported of various architectures be possible.

• Support a large number of hardware components.

• Serve as platform for multiple purposes: server, workstation, accessibility, desktop, etc.

• Offering a friendly distribution, but powerful and stable for both: the user and the developer.

• Put attention in the details and problems for his solution.
