The 83rd Annual Academy Awards - Oscars 2011
Colin Firth was last night crowned Best Actor, collecting the Oscar for his role in The King's Speech. Collecting his award he joked to the audience 'I have a feeling my careers just peaked'. The British Film took home 4 awards at the event hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
Other big winners on the night included Inception, which took home 4 of the evenings awards, The Social Network winning in 3 categories and The Fighter which took home 2 Oscars, with fellow British actor Christian Bale taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
3D films Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 were also awarded two Oscars.

London Critics' Circle Film Awards - 10 February 2011
Colin Firth continued his winning role by picking up the award for Best Actor for The King's Speech at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards for the second year running. The King's Speech also went on to win the awards for British Film Of The Year and British Director Of The Year (Tom Hooper)

18th January 2011, London - The BAFTA nominations
Dominic Cooper and Talulah Riley announced the nominations for the 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards with The King's Speech leading the way in 14 categories including: Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Director (Tom Hooper) Leading Actor (Colin Firth) and Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush).
Ballet thriller Black Swan received 12 nominations for Leading Actress (Natalie Portman) Supporting Actress (Barbara Hershey) and Original Screenplay (Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz, John McLaughlin) amongst others.

Golden Globes 2011
This year's 68th annual Golden Globe Awards took place in Los Angeles and was hosted for the second year running by British actor, writer, director and comedian Ricky Gervais.
British actors Colin Firth (Best Actor, The King's Speech) and Christian Bale (Best Supporting Actor, The Fighter) each won awards at the ceremony.

The Richard Attenborough Film Awards 2010
The Social Network is the UK Regional Critics' Film of the Year - Wins two Richard Attenborough Film Awards
Colin Firth wins Actor of the Year for The King's Speech
13 December 2010 - UK regional critics today announce their Film of the year, as a highlight of the fifth annual Richard Attenborough Film Awards (RAFAs). The prestigious accolade goes to The Social Network, which also wins Screenwriter of the year for Aaron Sorkin.
The RAFAs - the UK's regional film awards - comprise fourteen categories. Seven are exclusively for UK regional film critics, while a further seven are decided by public votes. In recognition of their achievement, each winner will each receive a RAFA award, remodelled for 2010 and engraved with Lord Attenborough's signature.
Voting in the seven categories for regional critics took place online between 15 November and 6 December 2010. The voting constituency was staff and freelance arts and entertainment writers, critics and editors in all branches of UK regional media. Results as follows:

The seven people's choice categories (below) were each decided by an online public vote. Toy Story 3 wins three RAFAs, more than any other title, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was voted for on ITV1's The Alan Titchmarsh Show.

Colin Firth, Actor of the year for The King's Speech , said: "I am delighted to receive the Richard Attenborough Film Award for Best Actor and to be recognised by the regional media in the UK."
Colin Firth has already won Best Actor for his performance in The King's Speech at this year's British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs). The film - now gathering huge BAFTA and Oscar potential - won five BIFAs in total on 5 December.
Chloe Moretz, winner of the newcomer awards in both the regional critics' and public vote categories, said: "I am so thrilled and humbled to have been thought of, much less win such an award when I am still very young. Thank you to all who voted and I hope that in the years to come I am able to portray characters that will continue to entertain audiences."
Veteran film star Sir Michael Caine CBE was conferred All Time Legend, voted for by the regional journalists. In the last year alone, he has appeared in both Inception and Harry Brown, and has published a volume of autobiography, The Elephant to Hollywood. The special achievement award was inaugurated in 2009 when it was won by none other than Lord (Richard) Attenborough himself.
Lord Attenborough CBE said: "The last year has shown the cinema to be both resilient and innovative, with large audiences eager to enjoy the unique theatrical experience. It has also brought a superb crop of terrific films with compelling performances from both experienced and fresh talents. I offer my warmest congratulations to this admirable set of winners."

82nd Annual Academy Awards winners

The Hurt Locker swept the board at this year's Oscars, collecting 6 awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The film's director, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the award for Best Director.
Having previously missed out on 4 occasions, Jeff Bridges won the award for Best Actor, his first Oscar, for his performance in Crazy Heart.
Pixar animated film, UP, won in two categories for Best Animation and Best Original Score.

28th January 2010: The winners of the 4th annual Richard Attenborough Awards are revealed today with Disney Pixar's UP taking home the highly prized 'Film of The Year' award. James Cameron wins Filmmaker of the Year for Avatar whilst Carey Mulligan secures a double victory walking away with Performance of the Year by an Actress and Rising Star awards for An Education.

Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker have each received 8 academy nominations in various categories including Best Film and Director.
District 9 starring also secured 7 nominations, in the categories for Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Production design, Sound and special visual effects.

The London Evening Standard Film Awards are made up of 8 categories; Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, The Peter Sellers Award for Comedy, Best Screenplay, London Film Museum Award for Technical Achievement, Most promising Newcomer and Best Documentary.

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire triumphed in the 2009 award season, collecting 27 awards so far - fantastic and exceptional recognition for a British film:
Slumdog Millionaire is the first fully-UK financed film to win Best Film at the Oscars since Hamlet in 1948.
Previous British films to have swept the board at the Oscars include The English Patient (1996 - 9 Oscars) and Gandhi (1982 - 8 Oscars).
On a great night for home-grown talent, Reading-born Kate Winslet picked up her first Oscar at the age of 33, having lost out on five previous occasions. London Film Critics' Circle Awards 2009
February 5th 2009 — British talent dominates the London Film Critics' Film Awards winning in ten categories out of fifteen. Slumdog Millionaire continued to win over critics by scooping three awards at the London Film Critics' Awards at a ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel, London. The Wrestler was also awarded for Best Film and Best Actor for Mickey Rourke.

29 January 2009: Cinema Days, the trade events for UK regional film journalists, today announces the results of the third annual Richard Attenborough Film Awards (RAFAs), the awards decided by UK regional film critics. Their prestigious accolade of film of the year goes to Slumdog Millionaire, which also wins Filmmaker of the year for Danny Boyle and Rising Star for Dev Patel.
Voting in the six categories (below) took place online between 15 December 2008 and 26 January 2009. The voting constituency was staff and freelance arts and entertainment writers, critics and editors in all branches of UK regional media. Many gather regularly at the Cinema Days events held three times a year. Results as follows:

This year, for the first time, the RAFAs expanded to include a separate section of people's choice awards in addition to the six regional critics' awards.
There were four people's choice categories (below), each decided by an online public vote and each run in association with a media partner. The Dark Knight wins in two categories, Mamma Mia! in one, and Dev Patel picks up a second prize. Results as follows:

Filmmaker of the year, Danny Boyle said: "This is a delight and an honour to be recognised for Slumdog Millionaire. My only regret is it doesn't happen for every film! It's brilliant, I love meeting the regional critics as they emerge glassy-eyed from twelve hours of consecutive screenings!"
Dev Patel, star of Slumdog Millionaire, said: "I'm thrilled to have received this special recognition from the UK regional critics. I have been absolutely amazed by the sheer scale and scope of the reaction to this film and I want to thank everyone for their support. I feel truly honoured."
Actress of the year, Kate Winslet has been nominated for both British and US Academy Awards, as well as already winning a Golden Globe and Screen Actors' Guild Award, for her performance as Hanna Schmitz in The Reader, directed by Stephen Daldry from a screenplay by David Hare.
Kate Winslet said: "I am thrilled to have been honoured by this group of critics whose contribution to the world of cinema throughout the UK is invaluable and which too often goes unrecognised."
Actor of the year, Mickey Rourke's performance as retired pro, Randy 'The Ram' Robinson, in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler has also attracted global acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination. It is Rourke's first on-screen appearance since Stormbreaker (2006).
In Bruges was the debut feature film written and directed by Screenwriter of the year,Martin McDonagh. Having won an Oscar in 2006 for his black comedy short, Six Shooter, he wrote the darkly comic original screenplay for In Bruges. Its cast was led by Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes.
British Film of the year, Mamma Mia! is the highest grossing release ever in UK cinemas. A UK-US co-production directed by Phyllida Lloyd on location in Greece and at Pinewood Studios, it stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper and Amanda Seyfried.
Double RAFA winner, The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan, is also a UK-US co-production. It stars Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Sir Michael Caine and the late Heath Ledger as The Joker. It was the third most successful film in UK cinemas in 2008 out of 531 new releases, tripling the box-office receipts of its predecessor, Batman Begins(2005).
The RAFA results were announced at lunchtime yesterday (29 January) at an event hosted by TV presenter, Liz Fuller, in London's West End. In recognition of their achievement, the ten RAFA winners will each receive a glass diamond mounted on a plinth, inscribed and engraved with Lord Attenborough's signature.
RAFA host, Liz Fuller, said: "These ten awards, spread across six remarkable films, bear witness to the world-class standing of British actors and filmmakers. I am delighted to be part of this year's RAFA celebrations, giving regional critics and audiences their own say on the year's most impressive movies."

The 66th annual Golden Globe Award
This year's 66th annual Golden Globe Awards took place at The Beverly Hilton, California. It was a great evening for British talent - in front and behind the cameras.
Slumdog Millionaire led the field by scooping four awards including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Director'.
Kate Winslet broke her losing streak by winning two awards for her acting in 'Revolutionary Road' and 'The Reader'.
