Raúl González won the first-ever Di Stéfano Trophy presented by Spanish sports daily Marca to the best player of La Liga. The Madridista captain finished first ahead of Kun Agüero and Iker Casillas.
Once the top 50 players were nominated by Marca's online readers, a panel of former players including Valdano, Zubizarreta, Hierro, Butragueño, Luis Aragonés, Gárate, Suárez, Quini, Díaz Vega, Eduardo Inda, Santiago Segurola, and Moratalla were responsible for picking the winner. Of the 50 finalists, 13 play for Real Madrid, eight for Barcelona, and five for Atletico Madrid.
Raúl González and Kun Agüero were tied after the final vote so a third vote was held to determine the winner, during which number '7' came out the victor ahead of the Argentine and Casillas. Wesley Sneijder received the second-most votes from web surfers.
Alfredo Di Stéfano:
"Raúl had a great season and that's why I voted for him."
Fernando Hierro:
"Raúl was chosen by the panel and internet readers for a reason. He deserves it."
Jorge Valdano:
"He makes opportunities out of problems and is great at counterattacking. He's in the habit if beating everybody. He's proven his ability to react and he's an example of a footballer and of morale."
Emilio Butragueño:
"There were a lot of good players but we could only choose one, and Raúl had a fantastic season."
