Part of The University of Texas System, UT Southwestern is governed by the UT Board of Regents. President Dr. Kern Wildenthal leads the medical center which includes three degree-granting institutions:
UT Southwestern Medical SchoolUT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and UT Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School. These three schools train nearly 4,200 medical, graduate and allied health students, residents and postdoctoral fellows each year.

UT Southwestern's achievements include:

  • Four active Nobel Prize winners — more than any other medical school in the world.
  • Among the nation's best performers in biology and biochemistry basic science research in achieving clinical breakthroughs.
  • An unsurpassed pediatric heart disease program in association with Children's Medical Center Dallas, including the first successful pediatric heart transplant in Dallas in 1988.
  • An adult heart and lung transplant program with survivals in excess of 90 percent — ranking among the top 10 in the nation, year after year.
  • Texas' first laparoscopic gastric-bypass surgery in 1999, with more than 2,000 weight-loss surgeries performed since.
  • Mortality statistics after heart attacks that are almost twice as good as national and regional averages.
  • Forty physicians and researchers elected as presidents of their national specialty associations.
  • Three-fourths of Texas' medical members of the National Academy of Sciences, the most prestigious scientific society in America.
  • More than 90 percent of all federal biomedical grants in Dallas and more than three-fourths of all those in North Texas.

As one of the premier academic medical centers in the nation,
UT Southwestern trains the physicians, medical scientists and allied health-care professionals of the future. Medical students learn to become highly skilled practitioners. Researchers are trained to lead the way in developing the latest in biomedical science. Students from our allied health programs go on to become integral members of our nation's health-care delivery and education system. With about 230 students admitted each year, admission to
UT Southwestern is highly competitive.


Patient Care

A great medical center offers outstanding patient care in addition to fine teaching and innovative research. We emphasize compassionate medical treatment. UT Southwestern's physicians are equipped to bring the latest laboratory findings to each patient. We provide inpatient care to nearly 97,000 people and oversee approximately 1.7 million outpatient visits annually. Our physicians provide care to patients at UT Southwestern University Hospitals, Parkland Health & Hospital System, Children's Medical Center Dallas and the VA North Texas Health Care System, as well as the Aston Building, the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, and other affiliated hospitals and clinics in North Texas.

We educate scientists whose research advances the frontiers of biomedical research and whose discoveries benefit society. We conduct more than 3,500 research projects annually totaling more than $360 million.
