Thailand's growing areas
Thailand is considered the number one leader in durian cultivation,
and the world's largest producer and exporter of high quality
durian, followed by Malaysia and Indonesia. The total durian
production of Thailand in 2000 was estimated at 826,366 tons,
worth about 2.3 billion baht. There are now more than 90,000
families engaged in durian cultivation.
The area for durian cultivation in 2000 was 849,000 rai, a 32%
expansion from 1900. The durian plantation share is about 11%
of the total acreage allocated to fruit planting. The eastern
region of Thailand has the capacity to produce durian for 73%
of the whole country, while the southern part of the country
provides only 24% of durian products. Chanthaburi (32%), Chumphonn
(15%) and Rayong (14%) are the largest durian producing provinces
in Thailand.
