Based on appearances alone the Alfa 182 looked as heavy as the car it replaced. However as a result of the introduction of a carbon-fibre monocoque in place of the aluminium honeycomb used on earlier models the 182 was significantly lighter.
Penned by the Frenchman Gerard Ducarouge the 182 kept the same engine as its predecessor and in the hands of veteran Alfa pilot Bruno Giacomelli it proved to be a capable contender scoring 7 points from 30 start.
Giacomelli was joined by journeyman driver de Cesaris who achieved a highpoint for the car with a pole position at Long Beach in 1982. He is shown on the right in the race were he led for just 14 laps before being caught out by the barriers.
The turbo variant was introduced in practise for the Italian Grand Prix and was blessed with a much narrower chassis not least of which was the 600hp 890T V8 engine. Reliability worries prevented the car being run in turbo form in a race leaving the two Italian drivers to carry on running the normally aspirated units.
