About the WIPO-Italy International Symposium

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Italy’s Ministry of Productive Activities - Italian Patent Office and the Italian Institute for Industrial Promotion (IPI) jointly organised an International Symposium on the role of Intellectual Property and Competitiveness of SMEs in the textile and clothing industry, held on 30 November-1 December 2005.

The WIPO-Italy Symposium took place at Real Sito Belvedere di San Leucio (Caserta), which host the “Jean Monnet” Faculty of Political Studies and Advanced European and Mediterranean Education (Second University of Naples).

The event focused on the debate on the role of Intellectual Property - copyright, designs, trademarks and patents – in supporting the competitiveness of SMEs and in helping them to cope with the threats of globalisation.

Entrepreneurs from the world of fashion, delegates from governments, representatives from SME support associations and intellectual property offices attended the event. Participation was for free and was open to anyone interested (experts in the field, representatives from public and private organisations, students, etc.).

The main topics of the symposium were:

  • The role of intellectual property in supporting SMEs competitiveness in the textile and clothing industry;
  • The value chain of the textile and clothing sector in national and international markets;
  • The role of SMEs in the textile and clothing industry;
  • The fashion industry;
  • The importance of intellectual property in the textile and clothing industry;
  • Protection of “intangible” contents;
  • Patents, Trademarks and Licences;
  • New technologies adopted in the textile and clothing industry, such as nanotechnologies and the application of biomaterials and other researches.

Visits to the local industrial districts were organised on the 2nd December, at the end of the Symposium (language used during the visit: English). Tesseci and Antico Opificio Serico were among the textile manufacturing companies visited.
