Alison Bechdel Among Triangle Award Winners

The 19th annual Triangle Awards were presented last night, honoring the best in gay and lesbian poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Given out by the Publishing Triangle, the association of lesbians and gay man in publishing, the Triangle Awards are also sponsored by HarperCollins, Hyperion, Curtis Brown and the Avalon Publishing Group.

Alison Bechdel won the Judy Grahn Award for Lesbian Nonfiction for her graphic memoir Fun Home, while Kenji Yoshino was the winner of the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction for Covering. The winner of the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction was Martin Hyatt for A Scarecrow's Bible. Bechdel, Yoshino and Hyatt each receive $1,000.


The Ferro-Grumley Award for Lesbian Fiction went to Lisa Carey for Every Visible Thing, while the Ferro-Grumley Award for Gay Fiction went to Christopher Bram for Exiles in America. The winners of the Ferro-Grumley awards each receive either $1,000 or the opportunity to spend time at a writers' colony in Mexico.

The winner of the Thom Gunn Award for Gay Poetry was Justin Chin for Gutted, while Jennifer Rose won the Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry for Hometown for an Hour. They each receive $250.

At the ceremony last night, the Publishing Triangle also honored Andrew Holleran with the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Robert Chesley Foundation also honored two winners of its playwriting awards: Eric Bentley for Lifetime Achievement and Chris Weikel for Emerging Artist.
