Texas Athletics completes Tokyo Olympics with 9 total medals, including 5 gold

If competing as a separate country, current and former UT athletes would have ranked 17th in the number of gold medals earned in Tokyo.

AUSTIN — Current and former University of Texas student-athletes accounted for a total of nine medals, including five gold, during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. If these athletes were competing as a separate country, Texas would have ranked in 17th place among all nations in the number of gold medals earned and tied for 26th in the number of total medals won.

In its storied Olympics history, current and former UT student-athletes have now produced a total of 153 medals, including 88 gold, 41 silver and 24 bronze. Texas has now had a gold medalist in each of the last 10 Summer Olympics, dating back to the 1984 Los Angeles Games. UT has had a current or former athlete compete in every Summer Olympics since the 1936 Berlin Games (20 straight Summer Games) and produced a medalist in 17 of those 20 Olympiads.

Kevin Durant paced Team USA to a gold medal in Men's Basketball and became just the second player in USA Men's Basketball history to capture three gold medals, as he also led Team USA to the gold at the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio Games. Ryan Crouser won his second-straight gold medal in the men's shot put, posting an Olympic-record throw of 23.30 meters.

Chiaka Ogbogu helped Team USA Volleyball claim its first gold medal in Olympic history, as the Longhorns had a member of a medal-winning USA team for the third-straight Olympics. Ariel Atkins became the third former UT Women's Basketball player to earn a gold medal in Olympic competition with Team USA. Current UT senior Julia Grosso converted the decisive penalty kick to lead Canada to victory in the gold-medal match in Women's Soccer.

Softball's Cat Osterman became a three-time Olympic medalist, leading Team USA to a silver medal. She previously claimed gold in Athens (2004) and silver in Beijing (2008). Teahna Daniels ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay for Team USA that earned a silver medal in a time of 41.45 seconds. Incoming freshman swimmer Erica Sullivan claimed silver in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle in a time of 15:41.41.

Track & Field's Stacey Ann Williams earned a bronze medal for Team Jamaica on the 4x400-meter relay. Williams ran the final leg of the preliminary heat for Jamaica, helping the squad to a season-best time of 3:21.95. Jamaica then placed third in the final to claim the bronze medal.

A total of 28 current or former University of Texas student-athletes and two coaches with ties to UT Athletics participated in the Tokyo Olympics. The 28 competing athletes marked the largest delegation that The University of Texas has sent to an Olympics, topping the previous best of 26 athletes at both the 1988 (Seoul) and 2000 (Sydney) Games.

All told, UT athletes and coaches represented 11 different Longhorns programs (men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's rowing, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's track and field, women's track and field and women's volleyball) and represented 13 different countries (Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Jamaica, Netherlands, Philippines, Serbia, Singapore, United States, Venezuela and the Virgin Islands).
