Spurs promote from within for Tim Duncan replacement

SAN ANTONIO – The Spurs have announced who will replace Tim Duncan on their bench.

Assistant coach Mitch Johnson was promoted Thursday to fill the vacated position.

The team also promoted Darius Songaila to assistant coach.

Johnson has been an assistant coach with the Spurs since 2019, he served with the Austin Spurs in the same role for three years prior.

Before joining the Austin Spurs, Johnson was an assistant at the University of Portland in 2016, after caching in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League.

Johnson did play basketball at Stanford University and spent three years in the G League and overseas in Europe himself.

Meanwhile, Songaila has been with the organization for three years, he was a player development assistant last year.

The Lithuania native spent three years in the LKL and EuroLeague before coming over to the states.

He did also play eight seasons in the NBA, averaging 6.9 points per game and 3.4 rebounds in 495 games. He played college basketball at Wake Forest University.
