The first ever animated, kid-focused version of Star Trek finally has a launch date: Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, October 28 with a one-hour premiere episode, as just announced as part of ViacomCBS’ Star Trek Day celebration.

The global live stream centered around the 55th anniversary of the original Star Trek kicked off its section focusing on Prodigy by revealing the official trailer and key art for the new series, which is executive produced by Kevin and Dan Hageman. The clip was introduced by series star Kate Mulgrew, who will be (sort of) reprising her role as Kathryn Janeway for the show.

In the new trailer, we get to see a few young aliens in the far-off Delta Quadrant, on a planet where we’re told “hope has no purpose here.” Naturally, there is a little hope on tap, in the form of an abandoned Starfleet ship, which they commandeer in order to leave the planet. Over the course of the two minute trailer, we meet our main alien kids, as well as our first good look at the villains, The Diviner (voiced by John Noble), and Drednok (voiced by Jimmi Simpson). Though we don’t know why — yet — The Diviner wants the ship the kids have, for unknown purposes.

And though we only get to see Janeway in hologram form, the Hageman’s teased at a recent Television Critics Association (TCA) panel that the former Captain of the Voyager isn’t the only Star Trek character we’ll meet as the kids make their way from the Delta Quadrant, to the Alpha Quadrant — i.e., home to most of the Star Trek shows.

The series also stars Rylee Alazraqui, Brett Gray, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Ella Purnell and Dee Bradley Baker. In total, the first season of Prodigy will have 10 episodes, including the premiere, meaning it will most likely run until December 23, though the exact Season 1 finale date is TBA.
