Isreali company Modu is set to launch its modular (get it?) cellphone in October. The Modu is a core device which will be sold along with "jackets", slide on covers which will offer extra functionality. The idea is that you have one device and then customize it depending on what you're doing and where you are. For instance, you can slot it into a computer to load it with music, dock it into a car stereo or slide it into a camera.

Modu has attracted a lot of interest already. It's backed by SanDisk, and Universal Music want to make music jackets for the phone. Not surprising: Modu founder Dov Moran has a pretty good track record. He invented the USB flash drive.

Modu will be showing the device at the GSMA Congress in Barcelona next week, so we'll have the details for you then. In the meantime, check out the promo video on the Modu site.
