Well this is something you won’t hear on ‘Songs Of Praise’, even this fine Sunday evening.

Remember back in April, when Tim and animator, Fraser Davidson, unleashed The Pope Song video on to YouTube? And you know how it’s had over half a million views since? And you know how lots of you were requesting that it was released as an mp3?

Well, to coincide with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the UK later this week, Tim has decided to let you have the mp3 as a free download; once the Pope disappears from the UK, this download will too, so get it while it’s hot like (imaginary) hell-fires!

Tim_Minchin_The_Pope_Song

We’d also like to point out, that the wonderful members of Angry (Feet) have been able to download this already for the past couple of days because that’s the kind of benefit you get from joining up!

EDIT: Due to popular demand Tim will leave this song up for you to download even though Benny has now left these shores.

Here goes Russian translation:

Fuck the motherfucker, fuck the motherfucker,
Fuck the motherfucker hes a fucking motherfucker.
Fuck the motherfucker, fuck the fucking fucker,
Fuck the motherfucker hes a total fucking fucker
Fuck the motherfucker, fuck the motherfucker,
Fuck the mother fucker, fuck him, fuck the motherfucker.
Fuck the motherfucker, fuck the motherfucking pope.

Fuck the motherfucker, and fuck you motherfucker
If you think that motherfucker is sacred.
If you cover for another motherfucker whos a kiddy–fucker,
Fuck you, youre no better than the motherfucking rapist.
And if you dont like the swearing that this motherfucker forced from me
And reckon it shows moral or intellectual paucity
Then fuck you motherfucker, this is language one employs
When one is fucking cross about fuckers fucking boys

I dont give a fuck if calling the pope a motherfucker
Means you unthinkingly brand me an unthinking apostate.
This has nowt to do with other fucking godly motherfuckers
Im not interested right now in fucking scriptural debate.
There are other fucking songs and there are other fucking ways,
Ill be a religious apologist on other fucking days,
But the fact remains if you protect a SINGLE kiddy fucker
Then Pope or Prince or Plumber, youre a fucking mother fucker.

See I dont give a fuck what any other motherfucker
Believes about Jesus and his motherfucking mother.
Ive no problem with the spiritual beliefs of all these fuckers
While those beliefs dont impact on the happiness of others,
But if you build your church on claims of fucking moral authority
And with threats of hell impose it on others in society,
Then you, you motherfuckers, can expect some fucking wrath
When it turns out youve been fucking us in our motherfucking asses.

So fuck the motherfucker, and fuck you motherfucker
If youre still a motherfucking papist.
If he covered for a single motherfucker whos a kiddy–fucker,
Fuck the motherfucker, hes as evil as the rapist.
And if you look into your motherfucking heart and tell me true
If this motherfucking stupid fucking song offended you,
With its filthy fucking language and its fucking direspect,
If it made you feel angry, go ahead and write a letter,
But if you find me more offensive than the fucking possibility
The pope protected priests when they were getting fucking fiddly
Then listen to me motherfucker — this here is a fact,
You are just as morally misguided as that motherfucking,
Power–hungry, self–aggrandized bigot in the stupid fucking hat.

Brilliant. The idiots that are complaining about the swearing didn’t even bother to listen to the lyrics. It’s self-explanatory.

motherf**ker with Samuel L Jackson immortal replacement (for cableTV)

you know – the monkey-fighting pope has a nice ring to it, and will not be censored.

one666 on 16th of October 2011

Brilliant little number, I love the catchy little tune, ofcourse there is a more serious side to this song, thankyou Tim for putting the message across

Downer on 11th of October 2011

This kind of destroyed the point by saying “fuck” so many times.

When I was young I was never sexually abused by any religion, but my mind and my spirit was and still is abused and offended by all the crap we are fed by all the mainstream religions. So thank you Tim, this song has made me feel much better.
Being a little old-fashioned I am somewhat reluctant to swear in public, But it is only ONE swearword after all.
So — here goes
Fuck the Mother-Fucker, Fuck the Mother-Fucker, Fuck the Mother- Fucker Church.

Richard Galloway on 30th of August 2011

Referring to David’s comment (September 21th 2010), you might want to look up the definition of ‘puerile’ in the dictionary before you use it to gun down Tim’s blunt eloquence. It derives from the Latin word ‘puerīlis’ meaning boyish, youthful, childish, immature and ‘puer’ meaning boy.
David, I find your choice of words offensive and inflammatory given the delicate nature of the subject that Tim has so perfectly shoved into the public consciousness. When something’s wrong let’s talk about it!!!
Good on you Tim.

there is no god where i am on 21st of August 2011

@donny: the pope is NOT comparable with mohamed. mohamed is more comparable with jesus. and tim minchin did NOT sing abot christianity, jesus or religion; he is singing about the pope and the institution church, the opposite of jesus and christianity!!!
if you’d like to make a comparable song referring to islam, you’d have to sing about those who pervert the teachings of mohamed like the pope/church, who pervert the teachings of jesus.

Dominik Rudisch on 20th of August 2011

Citing Peter who posted on April 4th:
“Im sure I could research and find heaps of singers and song writers that have committed crimes against children but I don’t go off condemning them all.”
*facepalm*

Dude, I guess you know the allegory about the splinter in someone’s elses eye and the beam in your own? Then you should (theoretically) be able to discover that you just shot yourself in the foot with a double-barrel 12-gauge (apart from being a complete bigot asshole judging from your line of argument).
Your defense doesn’t just fail epically, but demonstrates perfectly the catholic double-standards.

Albeit I’d still be interested how many child abuses from church personnel would be evened out in your opinion by those of a lone singer or songwriter…

Doctor T Wilde on 5th of May 2011

Fantastic Mate,
good on you for having the courage to come out and say it like it is.
Yes a lot of people will miss the point, but they are probably the same brainless ones who’s apathy over the years has allowed the behaviour of catholic preachers to escalate as it did. (YES, catholic with a lower case “c” …I have no respect for them….fuck ’em!!). I loathe all religions due to the fact my intelligence lets me see through all the crazy doctrines that were written thousands of years ago when mankind didn’t know much better. I’d like to think humans have moved ahead over the last 2 millennia and the availability of science has now disproved all the crap that the uneducated people dreamed up back then and passed down through the years. AN INTELLIGENT PERSON QUESTIONS WHAT THEY ARE TOLD !
To all of you reading this…try to be a leader and not a follower! Think for yourself…..don’t be preached to by blokes in funny and bizarre outfits who think they are above & better than us. (why would you want to?)
Athiests are not trying to convert you to anything, they’d like to convert you to nothing….no ulterior motives there!
Go Tim, keep up the gutsy work, and make us laugh. “Better to laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints”

donny on 4th of May 2011

can u do one about mohamed next?

Benny Pendentes on 23rd of April 2011

I am stunned – literally and truly stunned – that there even exist such people as those who heard this song and rushed here to denounce the language, the message, and the presentation, or to defend… well, I’m not sure what they are defending. The Pope? According to the Pope, his best friend is God… I don’t think he needs the help of random zealots too. The Church? The things Tim talks about in the song are a matter of public record, things the Pope and the Catholic Church have (sometimes a bit weasely) admitted actually took place, right before they pardoned themselves for their sins. The language? Are you fucking kidding me? A systemic disease is rotting the Church from the inside out and fucking up the lives of a lot of people, the kids whose trust they abused, the families and friends of the kids, the friends and lovers that the kids will grow to know as they go through life NEVER forgetting the abuses of power and the weasely way their trauma was covered up, minimized, and disregarded by people belonging to an organization that claims to be the first and last word on righteous, moral, God-approved behavior… and people are getting upset about the fucking LANGUAGE?

Then Tim isn’t just right, he must also have exercised great restraint. The wounded self-righteous bombastic pedantic ignorant arrogant motherfuckers who come here acting like this is all just a big football game and they are here to cheerlead for their ‘side’ are missing the point to a degree that is almost sociopathic in its lack of perspective and empathy and it’s clear that rational thought is not ever going to reach them… so what is left to say to them but: fuck you, motherfuckers.

(And have you noticed that not a single one of them actually listened to the lyrics? Their objections are almost all covered in the song itself. The ones that aren’t explicitly covered SHOULD be a matter of common sense, which I think they have established fairly well that they have been effectively immunized against.)

Matthew on 17th of April 2011

Did you listen to the song, Peter? Particularly the lyric “this is language one employs / When one is fucking cross about fuckers fucking boys”

I doubt Tim wrote this song for the money (he’s giving it away free anyway). He’s getting a point across, and in an effective way. The song makes you sit up and think “hey, that’s quite offensive”. Then you listen to it and realise that there’s actually a case being eloquently put that something far, far more offensive is going on. It’s called bathos (possibly reverse bathos, I’m not a rhetorician). You’re supposed to get indignant at the language so that you’ve got a starting point to correctly scale your indignation at the subject of the song (hint: much, much more indignant).

On the other hand, if you come away thinking “Gee, it’s bad that the pope is covering for child rapists, but did Tim have to SWEAR about it?” then your moral compass needs recalibrating.

L. Kincaid on 5th of April 2011

Being raised as a Catholic, now an apathetic spiritualist, this is hilarious. This kind of songs are necessary to do what we’ve all been doing right here: think about if it’s necessary for someone to write an apparently offensive song about something that should offend us more. Like Tim says on his song, I don’t care what other people believe in as long as everyone’s happy, but if there’s someone who protects child abusers, then they’re just as guilty. Good one, Tim.

Peter on 4th of April 2011

Don’t get me wrong Im far from a Tim hater, I think he’s great but what gives him the right to swear the was he does? I agree that what has happened in the Catholic Church is wicked but having to listen to such foul mouth language isn’t my cup of tea. Im sure I could research and find heaps of singers and song writers that have committed crimes against children but I don’t go off condemning them all. I think Tim is a clever enough man to think of another way of getting his point across without using the language he does.

Or maybe it all boils down to shock tactics and making money for Tim? He wouldn’t be the first to try it.

Dan on 1st of April 2011

Good work Tim

I’ve often wondered how this so called morally superior group rationalize there actions. Is it some kind of fringe benifit that comes with the job, where the all knowing all seeing turn a blind eye to his mortal representatives behavior? Or do the sit around in the dark and offer each other absolution?
They discusts but not supprise me, after all this is the same group that drowned, burnt, murdered thousands upon thousands of women in the name of….. But if you think “well that was back in the dark ages”, I’ll point out the fact that it was only a decade ago that they accepted that the Earth revolves around the Sun and not the Universe around the Chucrh. That only took 400 year which show that they are very slowly and very reluctantly crawling out of the dark ages themselves.

Porty: Americana – refers to artifacts, or a collection of artifacts, related to the history, geography, folklore and cultural heritage of the United States.

The writer/performer isn’t American. The person the song is sung about is not American. The church isn’t American. The prompt for the song going up was the pope visiting England. The scandals of the church are world-wide and first broke in a large way in Ireland.

Idiocy is such a kind word.

Larry on 13th of November 2010

I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s “brilliant” or “genius”, but it’s funny enough and in the way of much satire it highlights and ridicules very bad behaviour by bad people. And it made me laugh, so thank you, and please let’s have some more.

I find the few comments on here professing the disgusting nature of the song, almost as amusing as the song itself, (actually I apologise Tim, the song is pure adulterated genius). As is always the fact, Tim’s lyrics are clever, subtle and display a greater moral compass than the church ever has !.

Having been on the receiving end of unwanted sexual activity as a child, I try to understand the pain it caused and continues to cause me.

I enjoy the lyrics, tune and passion: I giggle at the alignment of profanities and morality. But there is a danger that the identity of kiddy-fuckers is seen as the be all and end all – i.e. it’s their nature, and the church simply protects them.

I’d suggest that in addition to the fun of mocking the pope, we need to understand the various institutional, physical and administrative mechanisms and knowledge structures that enhance and maintain the exercise of power within the church (and the social body in general). I’d guess that it is within these every-day mechanisms of power and knowledge that individual’s desires to kiddy-fuck are produced. It is not that the church (and other social institutions) simply protect kiddy-fuckers, they produce them and their desire in the first place.

The Pope is certainly not a “motherfucker.”

He is for sure some kind of fucker, but there is little credible evidence that he has had sex with any mothers; his tastes probably run in another direction altogether.

His followers say he is kinder than other mere mortals; so give them the benefit of the doubt and call him what he almost certainly is: a Kinderfucker.

Ronnie on 17th of September 2010

I spend my working days trying to undo the immense emotional damage done through childhood sexual abuse. Paedophiles are always attempting to minimise, distort or deny this damage. It is horrendous that the Church has taken the side of the abusers rather than the victims. The Bible says:” It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.” The Pope would appear not to have considered his scripture too well. This song mirrors the rage I feel at the ecclesiastical deceit. Well done and thank you!

My Da was excommunicated for marrying my mother because he refused to hide her behind the alter and then promise to bring us all up as fearful Catholic tosspots. Now all he believes in is keeping his mind active, occasionally turning off his hearing aid when my mother is rabbiting on about reincarnation and making sure that he drinks a little red wine each evening. He has some lovely stories about the Christian Brothers who educated him, and doesn’t miss the mongrel Catholic church whatsoever. My mother uses the word ‘Catholic’ in place of the term ‘Motherfucker’. What a marvelous little ditty.

I am Tim’s newest fan! Love this video and song.
Someone in his comment defended Christianity/Catholicism bc it provides ‘comfort to so many’ … I guess what it provides to the victims of these rapistpriests is insignificant!?!? A life ruined…? One innocent life forever F-ed up is more important than the guilt-derived, brain-washed comfort of millions, IMO. Go Tim… I’ll be watching and listening!

Theres someting i dont get…….How is it that people can easily listen to a song like “10ft cock and a few hundred virgins” an not be offended due to the inuendo’s in it and the fact that its actually taking the piss out of actual beliefs/religions. Here however people are being offended due to the use of language here, which doesnt make sense as if someone were to say fuck 10000 times it wouldnt make any difference if the person just said fuck once. You would only be insulting the first time you hear it in the song surely? Plus this song is actually taking the piss out of an actual fact that has been uncovered and therefore this song has a valid point……so after this little rant im puzzled to what exactly are you all offended/dissapointed about?

Apart from that…….Awesome, really good and amusing xD 5 starts!!

Unfortunately, it’s “faith” that allows these abominations to occur. When one no longer questions a man in a frock asking people to close their eyes, put their hands together and kneel… the rest will surely follow. Unquestioning faith is an evil and should be widely regarded as such, only then will similar atrocities be prevented.

Helenahr on 15th of September 2010

Brilliant. Thank you. My only complaint is I wish I had been wearing waterproof mascara before viewing. Any disrespect shown to this pompous, bigoted bloke wearing a frock and silly shoes, is totally acceptable by me. Ratzinger and his fellow priests fucking their own mothers is clearly questionable – but fucking kiddies is actually infinitely worse, is it not?

Someone recently made the point that paedophilia means ‘the love of children’.

What these religious perverts have been engaged in is child rape – which is not about love but about power and sexual perversion.

in Response to Tom.
the song is clearly directed at the pope and the priest guilty of molestation and anyone else involved in covering for them or protecting them.

I though understand the concerns of this being an anthem for Sectarianism, living in Glasgow I would hate to see the idiots using this song for the wrong reasons… or using it to support their actions against catholicism..

Ann Nonymus on 13th of September 2010

I am concerned that this song is being used as a theme to justify misstreating people due to their religion.
I will not defend actions of anyone who uses power of position to allow atrocities to happen. So in this way I feel Tony Blair, George Bush and the Pope are all guilty, this does not mean that Americans, Catholics or The British people are responsible or should be treated like they are. Enjoy the song, complain to the authorities but don’t take it out on the missguided innocents. Ahh fuck it…

Dave on 13th of September 2010

Tom said: “Yes, children are not sexual, and the sick behavior of a few sick men masquerading as preists in absolutely reprehensible and deserving of great anger.

But I feel this over the top disrespect quite disturbing”

Me says: I think the point, Tom, is to work out which is more deserving of your ire. And it isn’t just a few sick men, it’s an organisation – the Catholic Church – that systematically assisted in their abusing of others by covering up crimes and moving them to new parishes to abuse again. That happened far too often and there is a paper trail detailing advice from bishops that such cases should be handled internally so as not to embarrass the church. The current Pope has to a greater or lesser extent been involved in that. Even if you paint the story as kindly for him as is possible he is still the figurehead of an organisation that hasn’t punished those people who helped to cover up these very serious crimes and to my mind that makes him culpable also.

If you’re angry enough to write a comment here saying this is disrespectful but have not written to the Catholic Church to express your disgust for their behaviour then you seem to me to have your priorities wrong. There’s no room in the world for being offended by this video until the problem the song is about has been properly addressed.

I’m sure we’d all voluntarily delete the song from our hard drives and never watch it again if the Catholic Church was to fully cooperate with the relevant authorities in a way that meant every abuser was punished as well as everyone who ever helped cover up these crimes. (Including the current Pope)

I don’t see that happening any time soon. So the video has every right to exist. And any offence should surely be reserved for the greater crime.

Andy Allen on 13th of September 2010

Tim Minchin. Genius. That is all.

Tom on 13th of September 2010

I understand the message of this video and do find this video clever from an artistic point of view.

Yes, children are not sexual, and the sick behavior of a few sick men masquerading as preists in absolutely reprehensible and deserving of great anger.

But I feel this over the top disrespect quite disturbing. The Pope and Christianity for the most part, are a source of great comfort and hope for millions of people. Just as all muslims are not ignorant hideous evil terrorists, all priests and of coarse the pope, are not ignorant hideous evil child molesters.

Dan on 12th of September 2010

@ David:

Then fuck you motherfucker, this is language one employs

(:

Michael Neville on 12th of September 2010

David,

The Catholic Church claims it is THE moral authority in the world. However it’s become obvious the prestige and dignity of the church is more important to the hierarchy than the welfare of children. That is hideously immoral.

Your complaint about the language is answered in the song itself:

But if you find me more offensive than the fucking possibility
The pope protected priests when they were getting fucking fiddly
Then listen to me motherfucker – this here is a fact,
You are just as morally misguided as that motherfucking,
Power-hungry, self-aggrandized bigot in the stupid fucking hat.

Jonas on 12th of September 2010

If you’re having trouble downloading: right-click on the link, choose “Save Link As” and put it wherever you would like to keep it.

As for this silly, puerile David person, here are the final lyrics, copy-pasted from the YouTube page:

“And if you look into your motherfucking heart and tell me true
If this motherfucking stupid fucking song offended you,
With its filthy fucking language and its fucking direspect,
If it made you feel angry, go ahead and write a letter,
But if you find me more offensive than the fucking possibility
The pope protected priests when they were getting fucking fiddly
Then listen to me motherfucker – this here is a fact,
You are just as morally misguided as that motherfucking,
Power-hungry, self-aggrandized bigot in the stupid fucking hat.”

That’s a pretty coherent argument, you know. Maybe reconsider your priorities?

Tony on 12th of September 2010

You should release this on iTunes and see if we can’t have another rage against the machine one off. It’d be good if this was in the top ten when the pope visits.

Jonas on 12th of September 2010

This is a beautiful, angry and hilarious little piece of truth.

Beckle on 12th of September 2010

Dave,if you don’t like it the best thing to do is not listen! The swearing is just language…..ok it’s offensive to some but I think the clue that there would be some profanity was in the title.Swearing is a sign of poor intelligence in some people…fair point, however I don’t think that is the case in this instance at all.If foul language is Tim’s only crime it is not even remotely comparable to the crimes carried out in the name of religion. The Catholic church have,in particular, some disgusting atrocities in thier sect and that is FACT.
So next time you get uptight about a bit of swearing just think…is that person sexually abusing a choir boy?NO he/she is saying a WORD.

Ellie on 12th of September 2010

Marc on 12th of September 2010

In what way does an abundant use of swear words show a lack of intelligence, where is the proof for this? Not only does Tim use many varied swear words, but he makes them rhyme and the verses make perfect sense…….I doubt the song would have half the impact without them. Have your opinion that its puerile, have a dig at Tim if you want but he’s done a great job of bringing perverted elements of the church into perspective. I don’t see any “referenced discussion” having any kind of impact with these dirty, perverted and evil people. The lack of intelligence is on the part of those that blindly follow a religion that has for years been abusing its powers and brethren alike and do nothing about it.

Keep it up Tim, use as many swear words as you like, you get my vote for king of the world even if that lumps me in as being puerile and lacking in intelligence as well
