Theaters are full of family fare with Alice in Wonderland and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but How to Train Your Dragon looks to beat the competition as the new 3D experience.

The bigger issue is the crowded 3D theaters since Alice in its fourth week still holds onto to a percentage of available screens. In the US, Dragon is scheduled at 2,150 3D screens.

Critics are giving Dragon a positive average score of 94 percent at the Rotten Tomatoes website which aggregates film reviews. Audiences are expected to agree, though some US theaters will raise the 3D ticket price by 8 percent this weekend which moviegoers might not respond to positively.

Last weekend, the film had a strong opening in Russia. This weekend Dragon opens in many European countries, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, and should take the audiences that have enjoyed Alice in 3D.

Set among CG renditions of Vikings and dragons, the fun animated feature follows Hiccup who befriends a rare and scary dragon. The film stars the voice talents of Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, and three Scottish actors Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson and David Tennant.
