Sorority Celebrates Michelle Obama’s Acceptance

Michelle Obama and Eleanor Roosevelt

Michelle Obama is sometimes compared to Jackie Kennedy, but she may now have something in common with another first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. The wife of F.D.R. became a honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an historically black organization founded in 1908, and the group announced this week at its Centennial Convention in Washington that Mrs. Obama had agreed to join.

The sorority said that once Mrs. Obama is formally inducted into the organization, which has 225,000 members, she can’t become a member of any of the other “Divine Nine” organizations, as black sororities and fraternities are often called. Other honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha include the poet Maya Angelou, the late Coretta Scott King and former astronaut Mae Jemison.

But tonight a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, said: “Because of her respect for each of the historically black sororities and fraternities, her membership is
non-exclusive. She looks forward to working with all of them to help
bring change to their communities.”

Black fraternities and sororities have long been strongholds in the African-American community, taking roles in organizing during the civil rights movement. Most are involved in charitable causes and they enjoy an occasionally friendly rivalry at events such as step-shows. .

There has been speculation on black college campuses in the past year about whether Mrs. Obama would accept an invitation to such a group. Joining different organizations is often seen as an indicator of personality type. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, belonged to Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest historically black fraternity. The Rev. Jesse Jackson is a member of Omega Psi Phi.

“I know that there is a very large powerful A.K.A. contingent in Washington, D.C. and Chicago,” said Lawrence Otis Graham, the author of “Our Kind of People:Inside America’s Black Upper Class,” a book examining elite black social organizations.

Mr. Graham attended Princeton with Mrs. Obama and said there was not a chapter of the organization on the campus then. Mr. Graham said the fact that Mrs. Obama hadn’t been a member of a sorority before underscored her lack of “elite” ties in black social circles.

“It definitely gives them bragging rights,” Mr. Graham said of AKA. “She is the Jacqueline Kennedy of this period right now.”

According to Alpha Kappa Alpha, the criterion for consideration as an honorary member is that “prospects have made outstanding achievements that set them apart in their communities and careers.”

Why is this on the blog? What does this have to do with the candidates positions on REAL ISSUES facing the country?

A sorority? Seriously?

A. Who cares?
B. How elitist!

good for her. she’s a lovely, smart, educated woman and mother.

i remember the good feeling in our country when JFK and jackie had two small children in the white house…and i look forward to the obamas and their girls sharing eight great years at 1600 pennsylvania avenue.

god bless america.

A comparison I wouldn’t wish on anyone… As we now know, Jackie Kennedy was long suffering while her husband ran around with Marilyn Monroe and many others.

Good for her!

Let’s celebrate Michelle’s assent into the elite. Now she can feel that she is as much in the upper crust of society as Obama does.

Wow, now for the first time in my adult life I have come to realize that Michele Obama is the new Jackie Kennedy for the 21st century. I hadn’t noticed the resemblance and I hadn’t made the connection because if I recall correctly, Jackie’s husband, John F., had been a US Navy war hero, and had served 13 years in the US House of Representatives and US Senate before running for president. I also thought Jackie Kennedy had been proud to be an American even when she was a little girl and not until her husband was the leading Democrat running for president.

Now that she has been selected by Alpha Kappa Alpha, I know that Michele Obama must be an outstanding American woman because,”According to Alpha Kappa Alpha, the criterion for consideration as an honorary member is that “prospects have made outstanding achievements that set them apart in their communities and careers.”

By the way, what was her outstanding achievements that set her apart in her community and careers? And if she was so successful herein America, why wasn’t she proud of her country until very recently. I wonder if this honor will make her even more proud of her country.

Mrs Obama is a woman of directness and forthrightness and is not pretentious. In those ways she is unlike Mrs Kennedy. She has good looks and a statuesque figure. Both women are to be admired and widely popular. Mrs Obama I fear will will be felled by her bluntness so that in the future that comparison will seem less applicable.

11190000008!! Of course what else is she going to be? The first African American FIRST Lady??? Of she is an Alpha Kappa Alpha.

I don’t know who was in the room with Mrs. Obama’s spokeswoman when this statement was drafted, but I would wager there wasn’t one college educated African-American familiar with the history or protocol(s) of historically black Greek-lettered organizations present. Membership (honorary or otherwise) in multiple black sororities doesn’t exist, Katie. And I doubt an exception to that policy will be made — not even for Mrs. Obama.

sent to daughter. Did she act as Eleanor Roosevelt or did she accept the sorority bid with the exclusivity clause? She said she looks forward to working with all the sororities, recognizing the unique and lasting influence on civic life, educational, social and charitable contributions made by each. Now she will ever be
introduced to black groups as Michelle Obama, the Alpha.

Michelle wants to make sure we know she’s an elitist. Very wise.

Mrs. for Mr.. We sit down at the bar and I order Mrs.. It really does take homage away.

This is a very great honor for cum laude Princeton University graduate and the Lady Esquire from Harvard Law School to receive. There’s so much charm about this lady the media doesn’t know or refuses to talk about. She is truly a today’s elegant woman with her tall, slender, Kennedy-eque statute, coiffed hair, pop culture attitude, and a lady of couture. Essence, People, Newsweek, and Vanity Fair magazines have honored her too. The Harvard put her on their list as 58th of 100 most influential women.

It’s really horrible the New Yorker magazine did not realize how their cover perpetuates and appeals to bigoted fears, poor, fearful, illiterates, angry Hillary supporters, and Obama bashers.

That’s awesome! My mom is an AKA.

How long before Obama’s haters put some kind of negative, elitist spin on THIS? 5? 10 minutes??

Conservative shill: This just proves how elitist Michelle is joining an exclusive organization.

Liberal shill: This is a positive step that will help enrich the lives of so many young African American girls. Go Michelle!

Now that I’ve got the blog comment wimpy, wanna-be spin out of the way, can we finally have an honest conversation? Who do you even think you’re convincing?

And our “president” is a member of the secret society “Skull and Bones”, where initiation involved humiliation and picture-taking in front of others, to ensure compliance with society commands.

Obscene, really.

Michelle Obama is no Jackie Kennedy.
Who thinks that? The media?
It’s rediculous.

Will someone please tell Michelle Obama that membership in AKA is exclusive. If she is inducted, she cannot receive honorary membership in another sorority. If she is concerned and truly wants a non-exclusive membership, I would urge her to decline the invitation and work with all fraternities and sororities to address problems in our communities.

Working with all and being a member of all are two different things. I love politico doublespeak, LOL.

This is a big deal in African American social circles. Its very political, and appropriate for the blog, even if it appears marginally so.

More evidence we need to shorten the campaign season. If this is intriguing news to you, you need to get out more.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but it is obvious who the commenters here are who are white and have little to no experience with the black community. Why don’t you do yourself a favor and talk to some black people and ask them their thoughts and history of the black “Greeks” and you might actually learn something. They have a very interesting and colorful history, and furthermore, each of them has a very entrenched image. For example, I’m not surprised to learn Jesse Jackson is a Omega, or “Q-dog” (nickname). These men have a reputation for being hard partiers, and “dogs” meaning mischievous and perhaps a little reckless. MLK, being an Alpha doesn’t surprise me either, they are known as very serious, studious, and successful. Think wire-rimmed glasses = Alpha. Now Michelle was offered an honorary membership, which would be quite rude to turn down – so according to angry whites here that makes her an “elitist” because she went to college. I never hear you making that charge against whites just because they went to college. She didn’t even join a sorority when she was in college, obviously or they wouldn’t be doing this now.
By the way, the sorority that chose her, AKA, has the reputation for being the prettiest, most elegant (and somewhat studious) women. Stop this double standard where if blacks actually pull themselves up by their bootstraps and achieve education and work hard (I thought that’s what you are always telling us to do!) then we are “elitist” (translation: uppity negro). Make up your minds, do you want us to succeed or would you rather see us in the hood with no job or in jail? Make up your mind! Infuriating.

Pamela: thanks for writing!

Pamela, thanks for making that comment. It was interesting and informative. I think the truth is that most whites – “elite” and otherwise – really don’t know much about the world of historically black colleges, societies, and organizations. I’m glad the NYTimes decided to publish this Caucus post; I think this type of news and information is left out of the media far too much as it is.
