Johnson keen to secure Boro place

Johnson ready to fight for place

Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson says he is enjoying his football this season and hopes to secure a regular first-team place.

The 21-year-old has largely been restricted to a role as understudy to Stewart Downing since first breaking into the side.

"I've been quite pleased with the way I've started the season," he told BBC Look North.

"Now it's about taking it on and staying in the team."

England under-21 regular Johnson has made eight appearances for Boro this season, scoring twice.

Meanwhile goalkeeper Ross Turnbull has spoken of his gratitude to manager Gareth Southgate after he stuck by the Bishop Auckland-born stopper following October's 5-0 loss to Chelsea.

And the 23-year-old, who had a profitable spell on-loan with Cardiff last season, has relished the opportunity available to him this season.

"Credit to the manager and all the staff at the club for giving me and [fellow keeper] Brad [Jones] our chance," he said.

"He said from the start he would do that, and he has."

Both players were speaking after a Creating Chances event at the club, which showcased local performing talent.
