Kavanagh takes up Carlisle role

Graham Kavanagh
Kavanagh's last appearance for Sunderland came over a year ago

Graham Kavanagh has joined Carlisle as a player-coach on an 18-month contract after being released from his Sunderland deal by mutual consent.

The 35-year-old was allowed to end his Black Cats deal six months early after making just 15 appearances in two-and-a-half years because of a knee injury.

He immediately joined Carlisle on a permanent basis, having spent the last 10 weeks at the club on loan.

"This is a new challenge for me, but one I'm looking forward to," he said.

"I'm looking forward to combining the playing and coaching side of things and hopefully we will continue to build on the improvements that have been made recently."

Carlisle boss Greg Abbott added: "We've already seen the influence that Graham brings into the dressing room and out on the pitch and I think is a very good signing for us."

Kavanagh was signed by former Sunderland boss Roy Keane in 2006, but suffered a knee injury early in his time at the club and he failed to get back in the side.

"I'm gutted that, due to my injury, I didn't get to play more for the club," he said. "But I'd like to thank everyone at Sunderland for their support."
