Nigel Reo-Coker Reo-Coker gave Bolton an early lead at the DW Stadium

Bolton climbed off the foot of the table with victory in an enthralling Lancashire derby against Wigan.

Nigel Reo-Coker's close-range finish gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead before Mohamed Diame's emphatic long-range strike drew Wigan level.

The hosts dominated but David Ngog pounced deep into first-half injury-time to score his first Bolton goal.

Kevin Davies missed a second-half penalty but Chris Eagles ensured the win with a cool finish late on.

Individual mistakes proved costly for Wigan who, particularly after the half-time introduction of Hugo Rodallega, dominated for long periods.

Martinez frustrated with 'sloppy' errors

Steve Gohouri was guilty of losing possession deep inside his own half, allowing Davies to find Ngog for Bolton's second, before Antolin Alcaraz was dispossessed in the build-up to their third.

Manager Owen Coyle led the Trotters into this game knowing they had equalled the club's worst-ever run in the Premier League.

Six successive defeats had left them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table but, clearly under instructions to attack from the outset, Bolton started far the brighter.

And that early promise was rewarded when Reo-Coker gave the visitors the lead after just four minutes.

Darting to the near post ahead of Gary Caldwell, Reo-Coker threw himself at Eagles' dangerous low ball from the right, finishing from six yards to score his first for the club.

The goal triggered a period of sustained Wigan pressure and eventually they made the breakthrough courtesy of a beautiful effort from Diame.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bolton went into this game having lost six consecutive games and had conceded 21 goals in their opening seven matches.

After a patient build-up, he collected the ball on the edge of the box and struck a brilliant curling effort beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen and inside the top corner.

But Wigan undid their good work by conceding an avoidable second goal deep into first-half injury time.

Davies picked Gohouri's pocket before finding Ngog in the box, who shifted the ball onto his left foot and struck a low effort past Ali Al-Habsi to score his first goal for Bolton.

Rodallega added some steel to the Wigan forward line when he made his return from injury as a half-time substitute. The Colombian linked well with Franco Di Santo and gave Wigan the belief they lacked in the first half.

Victor Moses was one of Wigan's best performers, using his pace to hurt Bolton time and time again. But for all their gusto, they lacked a cutting edge in the final third and, although under pressure, Bolton weathered a lengthy second-half storm.

Dedryck Boyata should have put the game beyond doubt 15 minutes from time but, despite being unmarked in the six-yard area, somehow headed Martin Petrov's free-kick wide.

Coyle delighted as Bolton move off bottom

Boyata was at the centre of the action again when he was pushed in the back by Gary Caldwell in the box, resulting in a Bolton penalty.

But former Bolton goalkeeper Al-Habsi saved Davies' tame penalty to give Wigan renewed hope.

But that optimism was smothered in injury time when Alcaraz was dispossessed in his own half, allowing Eagles the chance to put the ball onto his right foot and guide it into the bottom corner.

The win moves Bolton off the foot of the table and leaves Wigan without a Premier League win in five.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle:

"The biggest thing today was having conceded the equaliser from a wonder strike it would have been easy for this group to feel sorry for themselves.

"But we knuckled down from start to finish and I thought we were magnificent."

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez:

"I feel really disappointed because we gifted Bolton the three points. The hardest thing is to score goals and we made it very easy for them.

"Apart from that I saw my team working very hard and if we had gone in level at half-time we could have won the game."
