Guy Moussi scored his first Nottingham Forest goal in stoppage time and was then sent off as they earned a fifth successive win by beating Barnsley.
Frenchman Moussi slammed a shot in from 10 yards before jumping into the crowd and receiving a second yellow card.
Forest had dominated and after Iain Hume's early free-kick clipped their crossbar, they created several chances.
David McGoldrick hit the crossbar, Paul McKenna shot over and Nathan Tyson rolled wide before Moussi won it.
Forest remain outside the play-off places on goal difference, but are only two points behind leaders Newcastle.
Barnsley had arrived at the City Ground on the back of a three-match winning streak of their own, but they drop to 20th in the Championship table.
Nottingham Forest Billy Davies on Guy Moussi:
"I spoke to the referee (Nigel Miller) at the end of the game and he apologised to me for sending him off. He said he was really sorry and that he didn't agree with the rule but he had to send him off.
"I said he was right, so what do you do? It is the most pathetic rule ever.
"Your player is celebrating a goal and it comes from sheer emotion and he goes and forgets himself for two or three seconds and runs into the crowd.
"I'm gutted for the lad because he played very well against Newcastle on Saturday and he came in again tonight and did very well."
Barnsley manager Mark Robins:
"It can certainly be a cruel game. I know how Ipswich felt a couple of weeks ago now when we did the same to them, but we have got to take it on the chin.
"We've done everything right and defended really well for 93 of the 94 minutes.
"Then, we switch off to a long, hopeful ball which we have defended well all night.
"It is a sickener but we have got to get on with it and bounce back from it, and we will do that."
