Crispmaker Tayto is to buy most of its rival Golden Wonder, the company has announced.

Tayto will take over the Golden Wonder brand name and the firm's major manufacturing plant in Scunthorpe.

Last month, the County Armagh-based firm bought Golden Wonder's factory in Corby, which manufactures the Pringles Minis brand.

Tayto, based in Tandragee, kept on 195 of Golden Wonder's Northamptonshire factory staff to make Pringles Minis.

Last year, Tayto secured a major contract to supply own label crisps to the supermarket chain Tesco.

About 350 people are employed at its Tandragee headquarters.

Bankruptcy

Last month, Golden Wonder went into administration, blaming falling sales and fierce competition in recent years.

With the purchase of Golden Wonder, Tayto has also acquired the Ringos brand.

It will sell two of Golden Wonder's brands - Nik-Naks and Wheat Crunchies - to United Biscuits, but will continue to manufacture those brands for United Biscuits.

Golden Wonder employed some 820 staff prior to the bankruptcy.

Tayto chairman Raymond Hutchinson said the company had a clear vision of where it wanted to be in the future.

"Golden Wonder affords us the opportunity for a high growth strategy and that's where we wanted to be," he said.

"Over the last five years we put in a management structure to enable us to do deals like this, and we are very confident with the management we have that we can make this work very well for us."

BBC NI business editor James Kerr said: "Tayto has been looking to expand in recent years - this deal catapults it into a different league - with sales of £100m, a staff of 350 in Northern Ireland and 550 in England."
