Prophylactic role of taurine and its derivatives against diabetes mellitus and its related complications
2017, Food and Chemical ToxicologyCitation Excerpt :In spite of its highly polar character, it is reported to cross the blood-brain barrier via the Na+-dependent high-affinity uptake system at the abluminal (brain facing) plasma membrane domain (Kenny, 2014; Verrotti et al., 2012). It has been found to be associated with a wide range of neurophysiological phenomena, e.g., inhibitory neurotransmission, membrane stabilization, longterm potentiation in hippocampus or striatum, calcium homeostasis, prevention of epileptic seizures and protection against glutamate excitotoxicity (Collaboration, 2010; Kitabchi et al., 2009; Lambert and Bingley, 2002; Tuomi et al., 2014). Diabetes mellitus is associated with a high risk of depression.
Ethnopharmacological survey of plants used against diabetes in Kisangani city (DR Congo)
2012, Journal of EthnopharmacologyCitation Excerpt :This high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms including polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are chronic and cannot be cured (Lambert, 2002; Patlak, 2002; Rother, 2007; Piwernetz et al., 1993), and remain today among dreaded diseases to mankind. Type 1 diabetes can affect children or adults but was traditionally called “Juvenile diabetes” because it represents a majority of the diabetes cases among children.
