Paramount has shifted its awards-season fare, moving George Clooney’s Suburbicon and Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! up in the fall release schedule while pushing the next iteration of Cloverfield in Imax to February 2, which is Super Bowl weekend.
Originally slotted for October 13, Mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Wiig, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris and Javier Bardem now is opening wide on September 15. The horror drama follows a married couple whose tranquil existence is upset when unexpected guests arrive at their home. Mother! leaves behind another horror title on October 13, Blumhouse/Universal’s Happy Death Day. Mother! is expected to trailer in front of Dunkirk this weekend. On its new date, Mother! will join Lionsgate’s Dylan O’Brien action film American Assassin and Open Road’s Blake Lively blind-woman drama thriller All I See Is You on the multiplex marquee.
The Clooney-directed Suburbicon will jump forward by a week from November 3 to October 27. It is a wide release and will square off against Lionsgate’s Saw spinoff Jigsaw and DreamWorks/Universal’s post-Iraq War drama Thank You for Your Service.
Bad Robot’s Cloverfield from Julius Onah was originally expected to open on October 27 this year. Having Cloverfield go head-to-head with Jigsaw was out of the question as it would cannibalize the genre audience. On February 2, the untitled Cloverfield pic is the big monster of the box office at this point in time, facing zero wide competition.
