Winnie Mandela tops ANC election list
Published:Dec 21, 2007

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela won first place in the election of a new ANC National Executive Committee with 2845 votes - more than 500 votes more than Jacob Zuma garnered in his race against national President Thabo Mbeki.

Madikizela-Mandela, former wife of Nelson Mandela, resigned from parliament and the ANC in 2003 after she was convicted of fraud. She has not been a member of the ANC since then. In 1991 she was convicted of kidnapping a child activist who was later found murdered. Her prison sentence was reduced on appeal to a fine.

Finance Minister Trevor Manual, who came first in 2002, and Mbeki’s chief policy adviser, Joel Netshitenzhe were not on the Zuma camp’s list of approved candidates, but squeaked home in 57th and 73rd places.

Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma - Mbeki’s preferred successor who failed in a bid for the position of deputy president of the party - was returned to the NEC in 35th place.

The NEC was expanded this week from 60 to 80 memebrs, at least half of whom must be women.

Controversial Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who was endorsed by the Zuma camp, was re-elected in 55th place. Her former deputy, who was sacked by Mbeki for insubordination, beat her in 33rd place.

Businessman Cyril Ramaphosa, who took first place in 1997 and whom many had hoped would challenge Zuma for the presidency, was elected in 30th position.

Mbeki’s team was largely repudiated by the nearly 4000 delegates.

Amongst those who did not get in were his Director General, Frank Chikane, Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad, Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad, Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils, former ANC Chairman Terror Lekota, head of the president’s office at ANC headquarters Smuts Ngonyama, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, pro-Mbeki businessman Saki Macozoma, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqkula and Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi and her husband, Deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi.

Businessman Tokyo Sexwale, who had retired from active politics but returned to challenge for nomination for the party presidency, came 10th.

Former MP Tony Yengeni, who was jailed for defrauding Parliament, and his wife Lumka were both elected.

Here is the full list of ANC members elected to the new NEC:
