Allie X and Troye Sivan have been working together for a while now. The two co-wrote a significant portion of Sivan’s two studio albums, but they somehow have yet to actually get on a track with one another. At least, until today.
On Friday (Dec. 6), Allie X released her latest single “Love Me Wrong,” a down-tempo duet with none other than Sivan himself. On the song, the pair sing to one another about what it means to grow up different, and to be told that you’re not accepted for who you are. As the two trade verses back and forth throughout the song, they eventually come together to deliver a final, punishing lyric: “Oh I’ll never be / How you remember me / So I’d rather be / In your memory.”

In a statement released with the new song, Allie said that she wanted to convey what it felt like to be fundementally “misunderstood” by your family while growing up. “You know that they love you, but not for the full person you are,” she said. “The relationship between a parent and child is so intense and layered, that it was liberating to put it into the simple phrase ‘you love me wrong’ and repeat it over and over in the chorus of this song.”
