Yes subtitles do work when downloaded as srt etc, however the better option is grabbing Klite-Codec pack and the full install package, since it comes with script to download from many servers /automatically/ and saves them in the given folder.
VLC is good but I think MPC is more efficient on resources and features.. which is what I reviewed above - works like a glove.
With MPC you can also use madVR which uses amazing decoding algorithms for video.. the difference is noticeable on any old movie since frames had stoppages instead of editing, and the field of depth (Hitchcock too) recreates a zoology of detail, or better perhaps: verisimilitude of camerawork that proves somewhat 35mm film is still stock standard until filmmakers are increasingly shrinking their product for a dark tapestry effect.. let alone the damage modernity has for film usually, and its memories of past/future to destroy yourself and all drives of creative ideation. Sorry for a ramble.
Hope this ails you fine, and enjoy!

First of all, these movies are great! The files themselves are great. But there are no subtitles. Here's how to fix that.
1. Download the mp4 version, NOT the mkv version.
2. Go find the movie on Subscene.com or your favorite subtitle site.
3. Download subtitles that are specifically from a DVD rip.
4. Play the movie in VLC and add the subtitle file.
This has worked for the first three movies for me. I think the mp4 versions are DVD rips, so that's why subtitles from a DVD rip work well. Maybe the same thing will work for the mkv versions and Bluray rip subtitles?

Ahhh what’s treat. Between every movie, not just Sanity Clause stand out. But most of each movie. Even Who’s on First has a hard time standing up to these. And Groucho was even more funny in person Being Himself. Like his interviews with Dick Cavett or even on the greats like what’s my line and etc although my memory may be false

I could tell just by skimming thru a few that they must have been sourced from PAL DVD’s….everything is 4% too fast.

Looks good... Only thing I say is add a jpeg of Humor Risk, to complete to collection.

Surely the best of the period, with music by Irving Berlin, music in the classic high pitch sound of the period due to the method of recording, with limited range made on records of the time making popular orchestras to imitate that now lost "tinny" sound. With the music which should be background, in the foreground shows another lost style of music makings. The plot, script, humor, etc. is nothing, compared with "At the Opera", "Room Service" and others but it is wonderfully "primitive", beyond "Animal Crackers" (closer to the first Marx Brothers stage play) made as a movie soon after.
