After destroying Manchester United while playing for IFK Gothenburg in a 1994 Champions' League game, Blomqvist is a player who has always been admired by Alex Ferguson.
Began his professional footballing career with Swedish first division club Umea and moved to IFK Gothenburg in 1993 where he reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup in 94/95.
He joined AC Milan after his performances during that campaign found many suitors queueing up for his signature.
He was then sold to Parma before joining United for £4.4million in the summer of 1998.
Made his debut against Charlton Athletic and made 38 appearances for the Reds in their treble year, as rival for the left-wing spot Ryan Giggs suffered an injury-hit season.
He himself was hit by injuries and that would cause him never to play for United again. His contract was up in the summer of 2001 and United chose not to renew it. He was allowed to stay on to build up his fitness, but his hopes for a new deal proved to be false.
Blomqvist was eventually recommended to Everton boss Walter Smith, and he signed for the Toffees in a deal which would last until the end of the season in November 2001.
Made his Everton debut in a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland a month later. Played 18 games in the remainder of the season, but did not figure in the plans of new boss David Moyes and was released in the summer.
Then had to hunt for a new club again and, after a trial period, earned a one-year contract with Charlton Athletic in August of 2002.
