UKAD issues Ryan Martin four year ban for steroids

Well, bad news for junior welterweight Ryan Martin (22-1, 12 KOs) — he won’t be fighting in the U.K. anytime soon.

Following his stoppage loss to Josh Taylor last year in Glasgow, as part of the WBSS tournament, Martin reportedly tested positive for banned substances androsterone and etiocholanone. Those substances are known to be metabolites of anabolic steroids, and as UKAD investigated and determined that Martin violated their rules, they’ve issue Martin a four-year ban.

Part of UKAD’s ruling read:

“American professional boxer, Ryan Martin, has been suspended for a period of four years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

“Mr Martin tested positive for the presence of the prohibited substances androsterone and etiocholanone (metabolites of testosterone) following an in-competition test. This came after his bout against Josh Taylor in Glasgow on 3 November 2018.

“Androsterone and etiocholanone are listed under section S1.1(b) of the WADA 2018 Prohibited List as ‘Endogenous Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (list of metabolites and isomers) when administered exogenously’. Exogenous testosterone, androsterone and etiocholanone are all non-Specified Substances prohibited at all times.”

UKAD also mentioned in their statement that they urge fighters to be completely aware of any nutritional substances they are taking, and if there’s any doubt, it’s best to steer clear altogether.
