UFC Fight Night 228 play-by-play and live results

LAS VEGAS – UFC Fight Night 228 took place Saturday, and MMA Junkie provided live play-by-play and official results throughout the event.

UFC Fight Night 228 took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streamed on ESPN+.

In the main event, Rafael Fiziev (12-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) took on fellow lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot (23-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC). In the co-feature, Dan Ige (17-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) met Bryce Mitchell (16-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) at featherweight.

Montserrat Rendon vs. Tamires Vidal

Round 1 – Vidal opens with a kick and Rendon responds with a right hand. Vidal continues to kick the legs. Rendon once again counters with the overhand right. They exchange punches in the center. Vidal taps with an inside leg kick, Rendon offers a fast two-punch combo. Vidal goes to a pair of outside leg kicks. Rendon lands another punch and Vidal presses forward, swinging hooks. Rendon backs and circles away from danger. Vidal goes back to the leg kicks. Rendon fires off another combination of punches that lands well. Vidal clinches but gets her back put on the fence. They separate and exchange strikes before another clinch, but this time Vidal goes for the single leg. Rendon keeps it standing until the horn.

Round 2 – Punches from Rendon and kicks from Vidal begin the second. A kick from Vidal gets caught, and Rendon takes the fight to the ground. Vidal attacks the right leg, looking for a kneebar or a heel hook. Neither are there, and Rendon escapes. Back on the feet now, Vidal stalks forward as they trade punches. A legal punch to the chest of Vidal causes a brief pause in the fight. Once they resume, Vidal angrily moves forward, yelling while throwing big shots. Rendon evades damage, and gets the fight to the ground with a takedown. From top in guard, Rendon lands punches and elbows until the horn.

Round 3 – Vidal opens with a hard outside leg kick. Rendon attempts to catch the second offering, but can’t get a hold of the leg. Vidal goes inside and then outside with leg kicks. Rendon is able to catch the next one, but Vidal gets her leg back quickly. Rendon moves forward looking for punches, but Vidal circles and fires off more leg kicks. Rendon counters with a nice right hand as a kick connects. A moment later, Rendon catches a kick and gets the trip takedown, landing in full guard. Vidal ties to keep Rendon in close, can’t stop Rendon from landing short punches. Rendon stays heavy to prevent Vidal from escaping, and punches until the horn.

Hannah Goldy vs. Mizuki Inoue

Round 1 – The strawweights meet in the middle and begin sizing each other up. Mizuki goes for a front kick to the body. Goldy offers a head kick that misses. They clinch in the center of the cage. Mizuki lands a short right, Goldy knees to the body. They jockey for position and Mizuki gets Goldy’s back to the cage. A few short strikes are exchanged as they continue to wrestle for position along the fence. They separate with just over two minutes to go, and Mizuki kicks to the body. Goldy lands a crisp right hand. More strikes are exchanged as they move around the cage, but they find their way into another clinch. This time Goldy gets the better positioning and puts Mizuki against the fence. They wrestle for position until the horn.

Round 2 – Mizuki lands a nice two-punch combo to start. Another right hand soon follows just before Goldy shoots for a takedown. Mizuki shows off solid takedown defense. They stay in the clinch and Mizuki gets the trip, ending up on top in full guard. Mizuki looks to pass, but Goldy kicks her away and scrambles to a standing front headlock. Goldy goes for an inside trip and gets it. Mizuki kicks her away and gets back to her feet, but Goldy goes right back in on a headlock again. Mizuki gets her head free and they’re back to wrestling in the clinch. Mizuki gets a trip and knees to the body just as the horn sounds.

Round 3 – They trade hard punches at the same time in the center. Another intense exchange soon follows as Goldy presses forward. Mizuki connects with a fast combo, and Goldy responds. Mizuki punches again and Goldy changes levels for the takedown. Mizuki stops it and they return to the middle. A nice exchange of punches in the middle, punctuated by a nice left from Mizuki. Goldy changes levels again as Mizuki looks for a combination. The clinch against the cage sees Goldy knee to the body, but Mizuki gets away for a moment. Goldy goes right back in for the clinch. Mizuki gets her back off the cage, but Goldy connects with a nice knee and elbow before the clinch breaks. Mizuki moves forward with strikes, but there’s another clinch from Goldy. They separate again and Mizuki rips a left to the body. Goldy gets a Thai clinch, but Mizuki is more active with her own strikes. They trade a few more punches before the horn.

Jake Collier vs. Mohammed Usman

Round 1 – Usman opens with a left jab. Collier responds with a punch and a leg kick. Another outside leg kick lands for Collier. Collier kicks to the body and connects with a hard left that wobbled Usman. Collier moves forward and an intense exchange of punches follows. Collier appears to connect clean again and then goes for a standing arm triangle. Usman slips out and more close punches are traded. Collier clinches but Usman connects with a big overhand left, giving Collier pause. Usman gets to work behind a left jab. Collier lands a nice combination of punches, and adds a knee. Usman lands a solid right hand. A moment later, another right for Usman connects as Collier comes in. A stinging jab connects for Collier. Usman lands a two-punch combo and Collier looks to clinch, but is brushed off. An outside leg kick and a punch land for Collier. They exchange left hand jabs in the closing sequence.

Round 2 – Collier opens with a pair of leg kicks, but Usman lands a hard right hand. Collier looks for a clinch but can’t get a hold of Usman. But on the exit, Usman extends his fingers to push off for a nasty eye poke and Collier drops to his knees in pain. The doctor is called in to take a look, and he takes four minutes before the fight resumes. They get right back to offering punches. Collier throws a pair of powerful leg kicks. Usman goes with a right hand and Collier kicks inside the lead leg. Blood is flowing from the left side of Collier’s face. Collier connects with a solid right hand and pushes Usman into the fence. They reset to the middle and trade jabs. Usman lands a right counter. Collier’s output slows as Usman works behind a speedy left jab. With a minute to go, Usman begins to ramp up his offerings. Collier gets in a left hook. Usman gets the better of one last exchange before the horn.

Round 3 – Collier takes control of the center and fires off a hard leg kick. Collier threatens a spinning attack, then connects with a left hand. A hard exchange of punches in center of the cage. Blood is once again flowing from the left eye of Collier. The exchanges are fast and heavy now. Usman changes levels for the takedown, resulting in a clinch against the cage. He then gets a single leg, lifts, and dumps Collier to the ground. Collier nearly connects with an upkick as Usman rushes in, but Usman takes top half. Usman stays heavy while punching to the body. He gets side control for a moment but opts to go back into half to control Collier’s right leg. Usman continues to work punches to the body while maintaining the position. Collier scrambles with 10 seconds left and gets a kimura that causes Usman to roll, but the horn sounds.

Cody Brundage vs. Jacob Malkoun

Round 1 – Brundage opens with a high kick and quickly changes levels to get a takedown. Malkoun scrambles back to his feet while holding a single leg, using it to get a takedown of his own. But Brundage is quick to scramble back to his feet. Malkoun isn’t done with the clinch and gets a single leg takedown. Now he has back control and starts landing heavy punches as Brundage covers up. Brundage scoots to the fence, but Malkoun maintains control and picks more heavy punches. The referee calls for Brundage to fight back. Brundage is able to grab an arm to prevent punches for a moment, but Malkoun gets it back and lands more. A minute left now, and Brundage looks for a rear-naked choke. He quickly gives up on it and lands a hard forearm to the back of the head, prompting the referee to pause the action. The doctor is brought in to check on Brundage, while the referee left the cage to check the footage. Ultimately, Brundage says he cannot continue and the fight is called.

Andre Fialho vs. Tim Means

Round 1 – Fialho gets the action started with a kick to the body. Means answers with a hard left punch to the body. Means goes to it again, and then adds a kick to the body. Means dips under a right hand and threatens a takedown, but doesn’t commit. Fialho kicks to the body but eats a right hand from Means. Fialho lands a nice right hand on the exit from a clinch. They clinch again a moment later and Fialho looks for another right hand. Means counters with a beautifully-placed knee to the chin and Fialho goes down. Means takes top position. Fialho prevents further damage and scrambles back to his feet. Fialho remains aggressive, coming forward with hard punches. Means stays defensively sound, and gets to a clinch. They separate, and Means begins moving forward. Means counters with a slapping left hand. Crisp punches from Means connect. Fialho lands a solid kick to the body. A left hand and a knee from Means land in the closing seconds.

Round 2 – Means lands a left, then goes to the body. Fialho just misses with a hard counter. Means keeps the forward pressure up and lands a knee in close. A hard punch gets Fialho’s attention. Another follow-up strike appears to hurt Fialho, but he fires back with heavy shots. Means appears hurt now. Fialho is really on the hunt for a finish now, looking to land hard right hands. Means is able to slow things down with a clinch. Means finds space to get in some clinch knees and hard elbows before they return to the middle. They continue to exchange strikes, but Means gets the better of it and Fialho is backing up. Just when Means starts to swarm, Fialho pushes back. Fialho eats a knee up the middle, but gets a takedown. Means scrambles and takes top position. Big elbows from the top. Fialho rolls to his knees but Means punches and lands a hard knee to the body in a big closing statement.

Round 3 – Means keeps the pressure up to start the final round. Fialho kicks to the body. Means offers a head kick in response. A few moments later, another head kick from Means lands. He then rocks Fialho with punches. The swarm is on! Means unloads as Fialho falls to the canvas. The referee rushes in to stop it. What a finish for Means!

Dan Argueta vs. Miles Johns

Round 1 – They size each other up for a moment before Johns offers a big right hand. Argueta times his level change, grabbing a single leg. Johns defends well to keep it standing. Argueta sticks to him though, and completes a standing back take. Argueta looks for the rear-naked choke, and they fall to the mat. Johns stays calm and gets free. Back on the feet, Johns looks for big punches, and lands a hard right as Argueta comes in. Argueta resets and comes right back in for a takedown. Johns defends and reverses the clinch, but Argueta jumps down on a guillotine. Johns gets out they return to the center. A hard exchange occurs as Argueta moves forward.

Round 2 – Johns misses with a big right uppercut as Argueta rushes in to start. Argueta is in on a guillotine, forcing Johns to defend. Johns slips his neck out and lands a few big punches from the top before Argueta turns and gets to his feet. A nice knee from Argueta lands on the exit. Johns swings with a big right hand. Another few looping shots from Johns miss, and Argueta gets in on the hips, looking for a takedown. Johns defends it, and they get back to the feet and trade punches. Johns lands a heavy punch. Argueta gets a takedown stuffed. Johns connects with a couple of big punches on the exit. Another punch from Johns lands, followed by an inside leg kick. Argueta runs in with a knee, but Johns evades and they end up on the mat as the horn sounds.

Round 3 – Johns lands a furious counter combo to start the last round. Argueta somehow just eats the heavy punches. A big overhand swing misses for Argueta. Johns jabs with a left as Argueta charges in. They exchange punches upstairs. Johns lands a left that drops Argueta to a knee. Argueta gets back up and keeps moving forward as Johns circles. An uppercut connects for Argueta, but Johns lands a counter. Johns shoots now, but gets stuffed. Argueta has back control, but goes for an armbar, and loses the position. They get back to the feet and trade more punches. Johns slows things down with another takedown attempt. Blood is flowing from Argueta’s face as he defends, but Johns is able to get the fight to the ground. Argueta looks for another guillotine, but it’s not there. Johns has a front headlock after a scramble. Argueta looks for one more punch before the final horn.

Charles Jourdain vs. Ricardo Ramos

Round 1 – Jourdain kicks to the body to get the action started. Ramos offers a front kick that misses. Another kick from Jourdain is met with two high kicks from Ramos. Jourdain fires off a left hand, and then kicks to the body. He then rushes in with a combination, and jumps on a guillotine. Ramos reverses and lands in side control. Jourdain still has the neck, and Ramos looks for the Von Flue choke. He gives up on it and gets to guard, but Jourdain gets the neck again. Ramos passes to half guard and gets his neck free. After a wild scramble, Jourdain gets in on another guillotine attempt. Wow! Ramos taps!

Bryan Battle vs. A.J. Fletcher

Round 1 – Fletcher opens things with a hard leg kick. Battle studies his movement and fires a body kick in return a few moments later. Fletcher darts forward with a two-punch combo. Inside leg kick for Fletcher. Battle offers a few front kicks. Big overhand right from Fletcher just misses. Another is blocked by Battle. Fletcher slaps with an inside leg kick. Another front kick from Battle. A pair of punches connect for Fletcher. Battle lands a left as Fletcher kicks to the legs. More front kicks are offered by Battle as they move around the cage. Fletcher shoots in for a takedown but is easily stuffed by Battle, but they stay clinched. Fletcher drops Battle with a hard elbow on the exit. Battle quickly gets up and prevents any follow-up blows.

Round 2 – Battle looks to control the range but Fletcher rushes forward with a takedown attempt. They end up clinched against the fence, where Battle gets in some nice knees to the body. Battle looks for the takedown, but Fletcher counters with a guillotine. Battle gets out and keeps control from top half. Battle isolates the left arm for a second, but ops to stay heavy and punch from top position. Battle goes back to the arm, this time threatening a submission. Fletcher gets it free and turns. Battle takes the back and slaps on a rear-naked choke. It’s in deep and Fletcher has no choice but to tap. Very nice finish by Battle!

Marina Rodriguez vs. Michelle Waterson-Gomez

Round 1 – Waterson-Gomez pumps out a jab and then quickly looks for the takedown. Taking control on the mat early, Waterson-Gomez begins working from full guard. Rodriguez gets a knee in and is able to get back to her feet, but the remain clinched. Rodriguez gets a few solid knees in to the body before they separate. Waterson-Gomez quickly rushes back in for a single leg that results in another clinch. Rodriguez gets the Thai clinch and lands some nasty knees and elbos. Waterson-Gomez is hurt and Rodriguez is unloading. Waterson-Gomez shoots in for another takedown but is stopped. Waterson-Gomez’s face is a bloody mess and Rodriguez keeps pouring on the offense. Hard elbows and knees continue to land as the referee watches on very closely. Waterson-Gomez does just enough to remain in the fight with less than a minute to go. Rodriguez keeps firing. Waterson-Gomez tries to get a takedown but is easily brushed off. The referee pauses the fight so the doctor can check the cut. Waterson-Gomez wants to continue, but Rodriguez goes right back to vicious offense and gets the fight to the ground.

Round 2 – Rodriguez fires off a few kicks early in the round. Waterson-Gomez gets the clinch and takes the fight to the fence. Rodriguez gets another Thai clinch for a knee, and Waterson-Gomez slips as she backs away. She gets back up and looks to clinch again. The Thai clinch is there again for Rodriguez. More knees to the body. Waterson-Gomez changes levels but gets reversed. Rodriguez lands in full mount and rains down punches. This time the referee saw enough and stopped the fight. A brutal, bloody win for Rodriguez.

Dan Ige vs. Bryce Mitchell

Round 1 – Mitchell comes out aggressively, but doesn’t offer any offense initially. Ige lands a nice left in an early exchange. Mitchell throws a left and then changes levels for a single leg. Ige keeps the fight standing and resets. Mitchell connects with an outside leg kick. Blood begins to flow from a cut under Mitchell’s right eye. Mitchell lands a jab and then shoots for another takedown. Ige pops up off the mat and they return to the center. A knee from Mitchell lands a little low as Ige lands a left. Mitchell goes for another takedown, and eventually gets Ige down in full mount with just under a minute to work. Mitchell postures up for a few heavy punches before the round ends.

Round 2 – Ige lands a quick jab as they bounce around the cage. He then rushes forward and connects with a solid right hand. Mitchell quickly changes levels but can’t get the takedown. They return to the center and Mitchell lands a nice kick to the body. Ige finds home for a big left hook. The referee pauses the fight so the doctor can check on the right eye of Mitchell, which is bloody and swollen. The fight resumes, and Ige ends up on top after reversing a takedown. Ige opts to stand up and they get back to work on their feet. Ige stops another takedown. A moment later though, Mitchell lands a hard right and smoothly gets a takedown. Ige gets out of full mount, but gives up his back and Mitchell looks for a rear-naked choke. Ige is able to turn, but Mitchell inches up an arm triangle. Ige punches to the body as Mitchell releases the hold.

Round 3 – Mitchell fires off a hard body kick and then charges ahead for a takedown. He drags Ige to the ground, initially on the bottom in guard, but somehow ends up on Ige’s back with a body triangle. Mitchell eventually transitions to full mount, but it’s shortlived and Ige gets back to his feet. Mitchell keeps with the clinch and dumps Ige to the canvas. Mitchell has a hold of a kimura as Ige attempts to reverse position. Ige gets his arm back and is in top position with just 30 seconds to go. Mitchell keeps him tied up to prevent any offense.

Rafael Fiziev vs. Mateusz Gamrot

Round 1 – They touch gloves to start the main event and begin feeling out the range. Fiziev circles on the outside and feints. Gamrot sends a quick left jab to the chin. A hard outside leg kick digs in for Gamrot. A few moments later, Fiziev rips a lightning-quick combination of punches to the body. A hard one-two combo lands for Fiziev as Gamrot drops down for a single leg. Fiziev easily got away and they return to the center. Gamrot lands a straight right. Fiziev rips a left kick to the body. Another right hand from Gamrot lands. A high kick from Gamrot is blocked. Fiziev punches to the body, and then adds a kick to the midsection. A still left lands for Gamrot. Fiziev offers a front kick to the body. A leg kick from Fiziev knocks Gamrot off balance. Gamrot then goes hard for a takedown in the closing moments.

Round 2 – After a quick exchange to start, Gamrot goes all out for a takedown and beats the scramble of Fiziev to get him down. Fiziev gets to the fence and then back to his feet, but Gamrot stays attached. Gamrot decides to let go and they get back to the middle. Fiziev fires off a hard kick to the body, but Gamrot gets his arms across to block. Fiziev goes down awkwardly after connecting. Oh, man. The fight is suddenly stopped due to an unfortunate injury to what appears to be the left knee of Fiziev. That’s a real bummer to end the night.
