“Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh is taking flight again — this time in The CW’s comic-book drama “Arrow.”

Routh is set to play the recurring role of Ray Palmer, also known as The Atom, in the show’s third season. His character is a scientist and inventor that will have an unexpected yet mysterious role in the lives of Oliver and Felicity.

In the DC Comics, The Atom can shrink down to subatomic size. Routh’s appearance on the show will mark the first time the character will appear in a live-action series.

Many fans got a taste of Routh as a superhero when he played the Man of Steel in 2006’s “Superman Returns.” He also appeared on network TV in NBC’s “Chuck” and CBS’ “Partners.” Most recently, he had a guest role on Fox’s “Enlisted.”

Routh is the latest star joining the “Arrow” cast in season three: Devon Aoki will playing Tatsu Yamashiro, AKA martial arts expert Katana; Karl Yune will appear as Tatsu’s husband, Maseo Yamashiro; and Peter Stormare will inherit the mantle of Count Vertigo after the Arrow killed the previous purveyor of the dangerous drug. The show returns Oct. 8 on The CW.
