Information on ''INFLAMMATION AND FEVER'':

Inflammation is a manifestation of the body's response to tissue damage and infection. The discovery of the detailed processes of inflammation has revealed a close relationship between inflammation and the immune response.

Inflammation is a complex stereotypical reaction involving a number of cellular and molecular components and important changes in the physiological systems as well. The result of each inflammatory reaction may be beneficial (defence the body against agents deranging its homeostasis) or harmful (damage to surrounding tissues). Therefore the basic information about this process is necessary for undergraduate and postgraduate students, clinicians, pathologists and other specialists in medicine, imunology, and molecular biology to whom the book is devoted.

It provides a short but comprehensive introduction to cellular and molecular aspects of exudation and sweling, cells participating in inflammation, mechanisms of their accumulation in inflamed tissue through the adhesive interaction between leukocytes and endothelial cells within the microcirculation, products of the complex plasma enzyme systems (the complement, kinin, haemocoagulation and fibrinolytic pathways), categories of inflammation mediated by the immune system and the role of fever.

The special chapters are focused on the regulatory functions of the adhesion molecules and inflammatory mediators, namely histamine and serotonin, bioactive lipids, proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, chemotactic factors and the acute phase reactants. Regulation and control of body temperature and pathogenesis of fever are also discussed. Starting from the basic knowledges, the book offers survey of current concepts from both research and clinical points of view.
