Con Te Partirò and Bocelli
Icons of Love and Italy

Doesn't it seem like you hear it everywhere you go?  In department stores, supermarkets, elevators, and hotels?  On television, radio, and even cell phones?  Andrea Bocelli's tear-jerking anthem, Con Te Partirò,  has come to symbolize Italy and Italians for millions of people around the world.  Bocelli concert-goers look forward to hearing it with poignant anticipation for they know it means the end has arrived.

Performing "Con Te Partiro"
at the San Remo Festival in 1995
Authored by Italian song writers - text by Lucio Quarantotto and music by Francesco Sartori, it was first presented to Andrea by his record producer, Caterina Caselli Sugar.  In February 1995, he sang it in the San Remo Festival, a prestigious singing competition in Italy.  Andrea won this competition the year before performing Il Mare Calmo Della Sera.  This time however, distracted with concern for his wife and first son who was born during the festival, Andrea only placed fourth with Con Te Partirò.

Later on in 1995, he released an album entitled, “Bocelli” which features the song.  The original solo version of the single Con Te Partirò "was a massive hit; in France the single topped the charts for 6 weeks, earning a triple Gold sales award; in Belgium the single became the biggest hit of all time, spending 12 weeks at No. 1. The album Bocelli has been awarded Platinum status in all territories of releases, including sextuple platinum in Belgium, quadruple platinum in Germany (selling nearly two million copies), quadruple platinum in Holland and double platinum in Italy."  Source:  VH1.com Artists a-z: Biography

Performing "Time to Say Goodbye"
at the Henry Maske fight in 1996

In November 1996, Andrea sang the song in duet with English soprano Sarah Brightman in Germany.  Changing the title lyric of the song from “Con Te Partirò” (I’ll go with you) to “Time to Say Goodbye,” they sang it as a farewell song for the German World Light-Heavyweight boxing champion, Henry Maske's last bout.  "A national hero held in unrivalled esteem, he is known for his love of selecting entrance themes to his bouts.  Sarah Brightman, the internationally renowned soprano and friend of Henry Maske heard Con Te Partirò in a restaurant while dining with friends.  Entranced by the singer and the song, Brightman made contact with Andrea.  Bocelli and Brightman re-recorded Con te partirò as the duet Time to Say Goodbye with members of the London Symphony Orchestra. Maske, unfortunately, was defeated on points by US champion Virgill Hill. As the German public paid tribute to their departing hero, the arena was filled with the glorious sound of Time to Say Goodbye. The single was released and shot to No. 1 where it resided for 14 weeks. With sales nearing three million copies, and a sextuple platinum award, Time to Say Goodbye eclipsed the previous best-selling single by over 1 million copies."  Source:  VH1.com Artists a-z: Biography

Also in 1996, the album Romanza was released, which contains the solo, "Con Te Partirò" as well as the duet with Brightman, "Time to Say Goodbye."

The Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas
In 1998, Andrea burst onto the American scene when the Tuscan-themed Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas used "Con Te Partirò" in their advertisements, enchanting the U.S. with Andrea’s voice.  It is also the featured music in one of the shows of the Fountains of Bellagio, whose movements are choreographed to music and light.

In addition, Andrea performed in a concert that was shown on PBS called "A Night in Tuscany" which featured a solo of "Con Te Partirò" as well as a duet with Sarah Brightman of "Time to Say Goodbye."

Perhaps the best examples of how this song has saturated our American culture are its many appearances in popular entertainment as a symbol of romance, beautiful music and being Italian.

HBO’s “The Sopranos” has used “Con Te Partirò” in several episodes:
Season 2

Episode 14, “Guy Walks into a Psychiatrist’s Office”
Episode 17, “Commendatori”
Episode 23, “Bust-Out”

Season 3 Episode 35, “The Telltale Moozadale”

CON TE PARTIRÒ
F. Sartori / L. Quarantotto

Quando sono solo
sogno all’orizzonte
e mancan le parole,
Si lo so che non c’è luce
in una stanza quando manca il sole,
se non ci sei tu con me, con me.
Su le finestre
mostra a tutti il mio cuore
che hai acceso,
chiudi dentro me
la luce che
hai incontrato per strada.

Con te partirò.
Paesi che non ho mai
veduto e vissuto con te,
adesso si li vivrò,
Con te partirò
su navi per mari
che, io lo so,
no, no, non esistono più,
con te io li vivrò.

Quando sei lontana
sogno all’orizzonte
e mancan le parole,
e io sì lo so
che sei con me,
tu mia luna tu sei qui con me,
mio sole tu sei qui con me,
con me, con me, con me.

Con te partirò.
Paesi che non ho mai
veduto e vissuto con te,
adesso si li vivrò.
Con te partirò
su navi per mari
che, io lo so,
no, no, non esistono più,
con te io li rivivrò.
Con te partirò
su navi per mari
che, io lo so,
no, no, non esistono più,
con te io li rivivrò.
Con te partirò.
Io con te.

I’LL GO WITH YOU

When I’m alone
I dream on the horizon
and words fail;
yes, I know there is no light
in a room where the sun is absent,
if you are not with me, with me.
At the windows
show everyone my heart
which you set alight;
enclose within me
the light you
encountered on the street.

I’ll go with you,
to countries I never
saw and shared with you,
now, yes, I shall experience them.
I’ll go with you
on ships across seas
which, I know,
no, no, exist no longer;
wjth you I shall experience them.

When you are far away
I dream on the horizon
And words fail,
and, Yes, I know
that you are with me;
you, my moon, are here with me,
my sun, you are here with me,
with me, with me, with me.

I’ll go with you,
To countries I never
Saw and shared with you,
now, yes, I shall experience them.
I’ll go with you
On ships across seas
which, I know,
no, no, exist no longer,
with you I shall experience them again.
I’ll go with you
On ships across seas
Which, I know,
No, no, exist no longer;
with you I shall experience them again.
I’ll go with you,
I with you.

POR TI VOLARÉ
F. Sartori / L. Quarantotto
Spanish lyrics: Luis Gomez-Escolar

Cuando vivo solo
Sueño un horizonte
Falto de palabras.
En la sombra y entre luces
Toto es negro para mi mirada.
Si tú no estás junto a mí…aquí.
Tú en tu mundo
Separado del mio por un abismo.
Oye
Llamame
Yo volaré
A tu mundo lejano.

Por ti volaré
Espera que llegaré
Mi fin de trayecto eres tú
Para vivirlo los dos.
Por ti volaré
Por cielos y mares
Hasta tu amor.
Abriendo los ojos por fin
Contigo viviré.

Cuando estás lejana
Sueño un horizonte
Falto de palabras.
Y yo sé que siempre
estás ahí, ahí,
Una luna hecha para mí,
Siempre iluminada para mí,
Por mí, por mí, por mí…

Por ti volaré
Espera que llegaré
Mi fin de trayecto eres tú
Contigo yo viviré.
Por ti volaré
Por cielos y mares
Hasta tu amor.
Abriendo los ojos por fin
Contigo yo viviré.
Por ti volaré
Por cielos y mares
Hasta tu amor.
Abriendo los ojos por fin
Contigo yo viviré.
Por ti volaré…
Volaré…
