Tim Burton’s cast for Dark Shadows gets better and better. Kick-Ass star Chloe Moretz is now in talks to join the Warner Bros drama based on the 60s TV soap. Moretz will play Carolyn. She’s the daughter of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer), the reclusive matriarch of the Collins clan and owner of the Collinwood mansion where the supernatural saga unfolds. Moretz just wrapped the Martin Scorsese-directed Hugo Cabret and she is currently starring in the Derek Martini-directed Hick with Blake Lively and Alec Baldwin. Moretz also is expected to reprise her Hit Girl character in a Kick-Ass sequel. She’s repped by WME and 3 Arts.

FIRST! and that’s great casting!
Years ago when I first saw Natalie Portman in Leon: The Professional, I said that she was destined to win an Oscar.
I am saying the same thing about Ms. Moretz now.
Damn, there sure are a lot of WME clients in this movie…
Love this kid. So talented. Hope she becomes a big star.
Very exciting news. Scorsese and Burton back-to-back. This kid is a superstar.
Great casting and well deserved. Moretz is a very special actress.
A beautiful, talented young woman who will shine for many, many years to come. Well done Chloe Grace )
Where did you get your info? Because as of this morning, this was nothing but speculation and rumor, and neither Chloe nor her brother have said anything about this film.
Oh, to go along with my suspicions of the Dark Shadows claim, it hasn’t been confirmed that a Kick-Ass sequel will ever bee filmed. The most recent news is that it has, at best, been pushed back.
Chloe Moretz is quickly becoming the actress of her generation. Look at the directors she’s working with?? Its insane. Her career is taking flight.
The only way they can do justice to DARK SHADOWS is make this a 3 hour movie!
Easiest prediction in the world to make: that this kid will one day become a multiple Academy Award winner…it’s like watching
a new Natalie Portman or a new Jodie Foster.
I love her!!!
Now, I’m getting nervous . . .
They’re casting a 14 year old to play a character that was originally in her 20s?
On the original series, Carolyn Stoddard was dating Joe Haskell, who had been trying to get her to marry him for years. She was also yearning to break out of the “prison” (that’s how she referred to Collinwood) and escape Collinsport, but she was mature enough to stay behind for the sake of her mother. How is a 14-year-old Carolyn going to portray this conflict?
So, now Carolyn is going to be a child like David? That’s ridiculous!
Why are you acting as though the movie is going to be EXACTLY like the TV show?
There are going to be changes from TV to film. This will be one of them.
Stop acting like everything needs to fit exactly into the confines of the TV show.
Actually this would be a terrible mistake if they cast her for this role,Carolyn should be in her early twenties this is the type of show as far as characters are concerned where that means something.Normally I would agree with you about that but not in this case.In this movie certain things need to stay the same and age is one of them. The story line could go any where that’s the beautiful thing about Dark Shadows there are so many possibilities you almost couldn’t go wrong with that. And I don’t think asking to keep the characters ages the same is asking a whole lot shes not asking NASA to make Mars the new Earth you Dick
What’s next? A 10-year-old Victoria Winters coming to Collinsport to serve as governess to Carolyn AND David?
Carolyn also represented a kindred spirit for Victoria Winters, since she finally had another friend – her age – to confide in and relate to.
What gives?
Wow. She’s WAY too young to play Carolyn Stoddard. It fills me with dread that this movie is going to be just horrible.
All they have to do is make her character younger than in the original show.
Because there is no possible way to get around that is there?
Not like they could just, you know, make the character younger?
And was the age of the character really the key to how good the show was? Apparently her being “younger” means the movie will be horrible.
Brilliant logic, there.
Actually she was a vital character in the show so that would make a big difference. So to Someone like you who obviously is not a fan of the show that would not be a big deal, but I guarantee you that the majority of people that will go to see the movie and by the way pay a lot to see it deserve a little bit of continuity.True Dark Shadows fans are very serious about the show and that is not something taken to lightly. So quit being a DICK
I love chloe and she was great in kick ass, the only major release to my knowledge. I wonder though, isn’t credit due to kick ass’s writer for making a cool unconventional part for a young girl? The character of hit girl stole the show for sure, are we not just crazy over actors who happen to get cast into cooler better written stuff?
Does Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins, get to have a cameo in this movie?
@ curious:
Correct. It all depends on how the character is written. I think Carolyn will be more of a background character, no real development. I hope I’m wrong because I admire Burton for his vision and after Alice in Blunderland want him to get up to from again.
Not rain on the Moretz love train, but to rain nonetheless (I think she’s a talented actress with potential, but I think it’s all hype due to Kick-Ass), I have one actress who gets better roles with half the credits: Saoirse Ronan. Not only that, but she’s the lead in most of her films.
And she doesn’t even live in America.
AGAIN CHLOE MORETZ????????SHE JOINS HICK MOVIE,SHE AUDITION FOR HUNGER GAMES,SHE’S ON WITH THE DARK SHADOWS!SOMEBODY PLEASE TAKE AWAY OR I’LL VOMIT!!!!!!!!!
It’s just a 14-year-old girl, Eleanor. No reason to go into hysterics.
Joe Pantoliano would be a great Willie Loomis, but he’s not the right age either, but since this casting move was announced, who knows? Actually, nothing would do Dark Shadows justice other than a TV mini-series or weekly series, preferably on some cable channel, like FX, or maybe even Showtime or HBO.
For my money, they should set it in the present time, but take up from where the old series left off, some forty years later. Otherwise, people will get bored with the same old story unfolding, while old fans of the series will just get pissed off when the new show-or movie-departs ever so slightly from canon.
Which is exactly why other remakes of the old series didn’t work, and are unlikely to work now. Nobody is pleased with the results. Time marches on, and Dark Shadows should either do the same, or remain in the dust bin of history.
Actually, in the original episodes of Dark Shadows (well before Barnabas), Carolyn was only 18 – roughly the same age as Victoria. In the original episodes there was discussion of Carolyn going off to college. 14 to 18 is still a stretch – but the character wasn’t in her mid-20s. The actual actress, Nancy Barrett, was in her mid-20s, but was playing the part of school girl.
My picks:
Elizabeth – Kate Jackson (would be best original tie-in). She’d have to play a bit younger (mid to late 50s) than her actual age, but I think she would be fantastic in the part.
Roger – Hugh Laurie – long shot, but I think he’d pull it off. This is somewhat of a critical character as he often provided the foil to most situations.
Victoria – NOT Anne Hathaway – need a younger person with more subdued facial expressions, but smouldering – like the 90s version played by Joanna Going. Elyse Levesque from Stargate Universe (Chloe).
Carolyn – Jordan Hinson from Eureka. As with Nancy Barrett, she’d have to play younger, but would be great.
Angelique – who, I think is the most important character other than Barnabas: maybe Alaina Huffman (again, I know, from SGU). She has the eyes and overall body movements that Lara Parker brought to the character.
Perhaps bring Jonathan Frid in as Joshua Collins.
I really look forward to seeing Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Barnabas Collins, as he was such a fan of the original series. Tim Burton’s SLEEPY HOLLOW had a VERY Dark Shadows feel to it and was so wonderfully atmospheric…I hope they are successful in bringing it to the big screen.
Going from memory, Carolyn was about 17 in the beginning. She had been sent home from boarding school after a near nervous breakdown. This was repeated in the early Dark Shadows novels. After the show was on 4-5 years she was in her 20s and married. Victoria was said to be 20 in the beginning, I thought.
I love this girl. She should be in alot more movies. You can just tell she will be beautiful when she hits 18.mmmwwaaa I would wait for her too as guy in kick ass says!!
