Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation
The Govt. of Maharashtra is committed to implement Metro Rail Project to improve traffic and transportation scenario in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This Mega project shall compliment various transport infrastructure improvement initiatives taken up throughout the region.
Govt. of Maharashtra has appointed MMRDA as 'Nodal Agency'. MMRDA through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) assisted by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) & IIT Mumbai is preparing the master plan for Mumbai Metro and DPR for priority corridors including nine corridors of 146.50 km to be implemented in three phases. The Comprehensive Transport Study (CTS) recommends development of 450 km Metro Network throughout MMR by 2031.
The objective of Metro is to provide a rail based mass transit facility to people residing in areas presently not connected by Suburban Rail System and to bring in the Metro System within approach distance of 1 km, and to provide proper interchange facilities for connecting neighboring areas of Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vasai, Virar, etc.
Metro Rail Act Applicability:
Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India vide Notification dated 16th October, 2009, declared that "Metro Rail System in Metropolitan areas of Bangalore, Mumbai & Chennai shall be developed & maintained under Metro Act, 2009 (Amended)". Thus the metro corridors in MMR will be developed under Metro Act.
Establishment of MMRC:
As per State Govt. directives Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has been constituted as fully owned company of MMRDA (registered under provisions of Company Act, 1956) as of 30th April, 2008. MMRC (at present) is responsible for the implementation of all the Metro Rail Corridors under Mumbai Metro Rail Project.
