Rubio Delays Atul Gawande’s Nomination to Serve as Top Global Public Health Official Over Radical Abortion Views
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) delayed a vote in the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on the nomination of Atul Gawande to serve as assistant administrator of the Bureau for Global Public Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). As a senior leader at USAID, Gawande would have tremendous influence over America’s global family planning and reproductive health programs. Gawande previously defended the grotesque and barbaric procedure of partial birth abortion, writing, “[w]hether the fetus is in the womb or out, big or small, does not matter, either.”
“Atul Gawande’s defense of infanticide is disqualifying,” Rubio said. “Infanticide should be condemned, not celebrated, but Gawande’s radical, anti-life views are becoming mainstream in today’s Democratic Party. President Biden should withdraw Gawande’s nomination and replace him with someone who is committed to upholding the agency’s mission of saving lives.”
“I never thought I would see the day America had government officials who openly support legal infanticide,” Rubio wrote in 2019. “Democrats are now the party of abortion on demand and at any point in a pregnancy.”
Rubio is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
