Borrowed from Middle French expiration, from Latin exspīrātiōnem, accusative singular of exspīrātiō.

Usage notes[edit]

In most senses, mainly US; UK equivalent is expiry. The pronunciation based on that of expire is common in Philippine English, but is otherwise proscribed elsewhere.
